Where was God at Columbine?

Secondly, I had a rather shocking and tragically sad discussion with a colleague whom I thought was a biblical Christian (there is no other kind -- anything else is a mockery of the word) who expressed that so long as you're "good" and not a "Hitler" or a "Stalin," then everyone will go to heaven. Really? Do you let "everyone" into YOUR house? God loves us so much that He sacrificed His only Son so that we can have every chance to repent and believe (cleave, surrendered to) in the ONLY One who can save you: Jesus Christ. None are good outside of Him (Romans 3:10) and if what you "believe" is outside of what God says about Himself in His inerrant word then what you believe matters naught. "Code 3" sense of urgency in sharing His life-saving truth -- He is the ONLY way.

Believers -- let's be safe on the street but radically bold in Christ.

"Eating our Young" -- Leadership in the Law Enforcement Profession

With Thanksgiving just a few days away, let me say in advance how thankful I am to be able to serve both the citizenry and my fellow LEOs as well. That said, the "What's for dinner?" response should not include our own. Huh? As previously reported, we are NOT meeting this Thursday because it is in fact Thanksgiving. However, we ARE meeting at my place in Highlands Ranch next week. -- Please pray for the family and colleagues of former New South Wales Police Officer  Natalie Newman who has died after a long battle with cancer.  Natalie was 34 years old and a believer.

(3) Pray for a Michigan deputy who was seriously injured in a foot chase and is facing more surgery and a tough recovery (see Kent County Deputy Injured ).

(4) Please pray for Atlanta PD Ofc. Reggie Robinson who remains in IT after he was shot in the face last Friday night.   


(5) Scott Chamberlain in Oregon writes, "I have an officer in Beaverton, Matt Henderson, and his wife, Tera that covet your prayers.  Tera is pregnant with twin boys and is due on May 15th. Problem is, she just went into labor - 4 months early.  This is a very challenging time for them. Please let's lift them up with prayer.

** Please pray for Israel in the midst of the escalating attacks on God's chosen people and nation.

** Please keep us here (Colorado) in prayer as we deal with the aftermath of yet another LODD (the details are in the newsletter and the funeral was held held on 11/15).  This is even more tragic because it was accidental "blue-on-blue."  The officer who fired the fatal shot is a believer and very much in need of prayer and support.

** Englewood PD Officer Jason Pearson is also a Ten-Four Ministries rep and reports that some 1300 cops and 500 firefighters who lived in the path of Hurricane Sandy are in desperate need.  Pray (and keep praying) but I'll be posting more on how we can assist our brethren and their families.  See http://www.officer.com/news/10829192/in-sandy-nypd-officers-find-themselves-the-victims  for more. 

** Jason also asks that we pray for one of his fellow officers (and family) whose teenage son was killed in a MVA.

** Pray for Jim and Terry Wattles who are down (but not out) with the flu.

** Pray for a state patrol chaplain ("Larry") who is having surgery today to repair a hole in his heart. 

**  From an officer in Kenya:  
"Thirty-one police officers of the Kenya National Police Service were killed over the weekend when they were ambushed at about 4.00am on Sunday as the pursued cattle rustlers,  Nine other officers have been airlifted and admitted to a Nairobi hospital in critical condition. 7 more officers are still missing.

The officers were trying to recover over 500 stolen head of cattle when they encountered the armed bandits. About 100 officers were involved in the operation. The remote area is most hard hit by insecurity partly due to proliferation of small arms that has promoted the culture of cattle rustling over the years.

Families of the slain officers are yet to be informed as the officers have been working way far away from their families. Pray with us for the families of the departed and the traumatized officers who survived the attack. Pray also for the chaplains and christian officers who are trying to provide support.

"Band of Brothers" and the 4th of July: TCLEM/FCPO Newsletter

Band of Brothers

One of the primary "spokes" that makes up the "wheel" of this ministry is fellowship. By "fellowship" I'm not speaking of the bogus and potentially career-ending/marriage-ending escapades of police "choir practice" but rather the kind of "iron sharpens iron" fellowship that Solomon directs us to in Proverbs 27:17. Moreover, Paul reminds us in Hebrews 10:24-25 to "...think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. And let us not neglect our meeting together (aka, "church"), as some do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of His return is drawing near."

Cooper Abrams, in his excellent short Bible study on fellowship (see link in newsletter version), points us to Acts 2:45-47 where we are directed to be "strengthened" through meeting together. Finally, our friends with GotQuestions.org have put together a biblically rock-solid short article on the importance of Christian fellowship that I highly recommend (again, see link in newsletter version).

In the excellent book (and the miniseries that followed it) Band of Brothers, Carwood Lipton quotes part of Shakespeare's Henry V speech at the Battle of Agincourt, to wit, "From this day to the ending of the world we in it shall be remembered. We lucky few, we band of brothers. For he who today sheds his blood with me shall be my brother." As God's servant-warriors, we are indeed a "band of brothers" (and yes, that most definitely includes our sisters as well) united under His banner. Let's be sure that we don't leave on of our own behind on the "field" but instead lift each other up in the cause God has set before us!

Finally, and in honor of our country's birthday, I wanted to share with you some truths expressed by Chaplain Paul Northcut of Cross and Shield Ministries (thanks to Grant Wolf for bringing it to my attention):

"This week we celebrate the birthday of our great nation. 236 years ago Godly men established this Republic on the principles found in God's Word. Our Founding Fathers understood that it's to God, not the government, that we owe our first allegiance. In fact it was a religious revival, 'the Great Awakening' in the 1730s, that inspired many Americans to fight in the Revolutionary War to secure their God given freedoms. John Dickinson, a signer of the U.S. Constitution, wrote 'Governments could not give us the rights essential to happiness - we claim them from a higher source - the King of Kings and Lord of all the earth (Jesus Christ).' General George Washington established the U. S. Military Chaplaincy Corps for the Continental Army in July 1775 making it the second oldest corps in the Army. Yes, we have a Godly heritage. Over two centuries ago Patrick Henry declared "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, not on religion but on the gospel of Jesus Christ." But in recent years we have drifted away from those founding principles, and I'm afraid we may be close to losing His blessing. One of our greatest Presidents said it well, "If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under." Ronald Reagan. But more importantly God's Word tells us, "Blessed (happy and thriving) is the nation whose God is the Lord." (Psalm 33:12) This July 4th as we celebrate our independence - let's remember and renew our dependence on the Lord, Jesus Christ."

As National Police Memorial Week in DC and National Police Month (May) come to a close, my prayer is that the recap of last week's message will serve as a reminder that we must have a "Code 3" sense of urgency in sharing Christ with our own so that they can have every possible chance to say "yes" to Christ and therefore when their (and "our") time comes, their lives can be celebrated for an eternal victory and not mourned for the untenable alternative.  That's eternal "officer safety."  Let's stay the course -- in Christ!

We had a lively discussion at last week’s Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry Bible study during Part 2 of our current 3-part series on the character of our lives as Christians and as Christian servant-warriors. Jim Wattles’ study on being an “overcomer” was recapped in last week’s newsletter and in the January 11th post here on our website. Message RECAP: Radical Cops, Radical Christians

In our culture, the term “radical” is often misused and misapplied, especially as it relates to those who claim the title “Christian.” Rosie O’Donnell on The View said “As a result of the [9-11] attack and the killing of 3000 innocent people, we invaded two countries and killed innocent people… Radical Christianity is just as threatening as radical Islam in a country like America where we have separation of Church and State.” Seriously?

Merriam Webster by contrast correctly defines “radical” as: “of or relating to the origin: fundamental” and “forming a basis or foundation.” It is also derived from the word “root.”

Folks, the foundation of Christianity is Jesus Christ and His root injunction to “love one another as I have loved you.” (John 13:34). Is our radical Savior calling YOU to be a radical follower?

Tulsa PD Captain and Ten-Four Ministries Director Travis Yates, in a recent response to a support organization seeking to link their website with his (www.tenfourministries.org), wrote, “…a very important tenant to following Christ is His own words in John 14:6, that He and He alone is the only way …please understand that I mention this in love. The support of... that are not of the Christian Faith is only leading law enforcement down the path of destruction. Whether that is Muslim, Catholic, Psychology, etc., anyone that does not promote Christ alone for salvation, is wrong . Jesus Himself said this and I hope you understand that we cannot support anything outside of that. I understand that making that statement may not be popular or win us a lot of friends but it is the most important thing in life -- What is salvation? Our first responders need to know that. They need to know there is a truth and only one truth and most importantly they need to know what that truth is and it is repentance and faith in Jesus Christ…Thank you again for your e-mail and I pray that you understand why we couldn't link to your organization.”

Travis is a radical Christian obediently delivering a radical message. Likewise, Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow is another radical Christian who is often vilified for his outspoken (radical) faith. In response to one such criticism, Tim said, "If you're married and you have a wife and you really love your wife, is it good enough to only say to your wife, ‘I love you,' the day you get married? Or should you tell her every single day when you wake up and every opportunity? That's how I feel about my relationship with Jesus Christ; that is the most important thing in my life. So any time I get an opportunity to tell Him I love Him or am given an opportunity to shout Him out on national TV, I'm gonna take that opportunity. So I look at it as a relationship I have with Him that I want to give Him the honor and glory anytime I have the opportunity. Then right after I give Him the honor and glory…" (Note: I highly recommend Tim’s book Through My Eyes and his charitable foundation, http://timtebowfoundation.org).

So is Travis’ and Tim’s radical Christianity something that we too should be pursuing? What does God himself say? In the “Sermon on the Mount” (Matthew 5-7), Jesus Himself presents the radical Christian worldview. Moreover, He radically proclaims in Matthew 10:34, Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.

In Hebrews 13:1-6, God reveals that radical Christianity is based on love; radical Christianity is dangerous (criticism, persecution, imprisonment and even death); and radical Christianity is feerless.

Feerless? The command “Fear not!” is used more than 365 times in the Bible. God won’t leave me; God will never forsake me; He is my helper and my strength; To live is Christ and to die is gain (Philippians 1:21); I will not fear (Psalm 118:6); I will stand strong and courageous (Deuteronomy 31:6; Joshua 1:6). Rak Chazak! Fear not! (http://ellerslie.com/BHT-The_Ancient_War_Cry.html). Radical!

Pastor Fernando Ortiz of Mile High Calvary (www.milehighcalvary.com) says the following in his introduction to his daily Radical Living radio show on 89.7 Grace FM (http://897gracefm.com/):
“A radical by definition is someone who gets back to the root of their belief, someone who is not satisfied with the status quo. As Christians we are to be as counter-cultural to our culture as Jesus was to His. We are to get back to the root of who we are and what we believe, and Jesus is calling us to be radical followers of Him. Radical in our walk, radical in commitment, radical in our faithfulness, radical in our prayers, radical in our devotion and radical in our living. Will you be that? Will you be a Christian that is not satisfied with the status quo? Will you be a radical follower of Jesus?” Will you?

In his 1936 book Sacrifice, Howard Guinness wrote, “Where are the young men and women of this generation who will hold their lives cheap, and be faithful even unto death, who will lose their lives for Christ’s, flinging them away for love of him? Where are those who will live dangerously, and be reckless in this service? Where are the men of prayer? Where are the men who count God’s Word of more importance to them than their daily food? Where are the men who, like Moses of old, commune with God face to face as a man speaks with his friend? Where are God’s men in this day of God’s power?”

Where indeed! Jesus is calling ALL of us to radical Christianity – REAL Christianity (there should be no other kind)! Will you obediently and radically love, serve and protect your wife and family? Will you radically serve and protect your church? Will you radically serve, protect and minister to the public? Will you live a radical, real Christian life? Will you?

May God make us into true servant-warriors who are clearly sold out – radical – for Him. May He raise up an army of radical believers who are not satisfied with typical mediocre, lukewarm (Revelation 3:16) “Christian” lives -- cops who are radical, churches that are radical, pastors who are radical, Sunday School teachers who are radical, businessman who are radical, athletes who are radical, retirees who are radical, parents who are radical, students who are radical, teenagers who are radical, and children who are radical for Christ.

Cops, 9-11 & God: TCLEM Newsletter

We’ll also be sharing some ideas about both the direction of this ministry and the biblical essentials foundation) on which it is built. MESSAGE RECAP: Cops and Depression – a Biblical Approach


That a great many peace officers and military combat personnel suffer from depression should not come as any big surprise. The sad fact is that depression is a leading contributor to police suicide and a host of other maladies.

I want to start by saying that while I both practice and encourage biblical (nouthetic -- www.compassionatecounselors.com/Statement.aspx) counseling and believe that God’s inerrant word supplies a real and viable solution to depression, I am not taking a position that the secular approach has no value. Rather, my position – and that of this ministry – is that God has THE answer if you will but seek it with your whole mind and heart. Moreover, I am not in any way saying that medicine (psychiatry as opposed to secular psychology) has no value. On the contrary, some (but not all) types of depression may stem from very real medical conditions that call for medical intervention. That aside, it is important to point out the very basis of secular psychology points to self while the biblical approach points us to Christ (No small difference this!). Where God is calling the Christian to turn is therefore clear.

The overall context of scripture presents numerous examples of depression and God’s solution for same. Moreover, it is vital that we point out that a great deal of depression (though not all) is a consequence of SIN and God most certainly has the solution for that. Beyond that, the following are thought to play a significant role in depression:

(1) Alcohol abuse (ETOH is a depressant – duh!).
(2) Drug abuse.
(3) Certain medical conditions including but not limited to thyroid issues, cancer, chronic pain, etc.
(4) Certain medication side-effects (including side-effects of some anti-depressants).
(5) Sleep (lack of, disorders).
(6) Stressful albeit common life events such as school problems, divorce (sin), death and/or illness of a loved one, childhood abuse/neglect, job issues/loss, financial issues (some of which may be sin-based), and the social isolation that is common in the law enforcement profession.

What does the Bible say about depression? For starters:

-- Proverbs 13:12

-- Proverbs 18:14

-- Job 7:6, 11


God’s word is also clear that Satan will most assuredly attempt to take advantage of our weaknesses. How do we combat his attacks? Ephesians 6:11-12, 2 Corinthians 2:7-11 and 1 Peter 5:6-9 provide part of the defense and solution. The Bible further reveals that David was no stranger to depression (Psalm 42 and 43) and his son Solomon writes in Proverbs 18:14 that A man’s spirit sustains him in sickness, but a crushed spirit who can bear?

The Bible presents a plethora of examples of those who suffered from depression. Here are but two:

(1) Jeremiah – the “Weeping Prophet” (read Lamentations 3)

-- Jeremiah's mental state: Lamentations 3:14-20


-- God’s solution: Lamentations 3:21-26, 37-40 present the key -- God is in control and our hope is in Him and Him alone.

(2) Elijah: Discouragement (aka depression -- read 1 Kings 19)

-- Contrast Elijah’s discouragement (depression) in 1 Kings 19:4 with 2 Kings 2:9! It serves to remind us that when our focus is on ourselves (secular psychology) we can open the door for the enemy to come in with discouragement/depression. While we can identify with 1 Kings 19:4, God is calling us to to live in 2 Kings 2:9!

-- Discouragement/depression will affect our self-image (Proverbs 23:7). When our hearts and minds are focused on Jesus and not on ourselves, we will catch a glimpse of who we are in Christ – mighty men and women of God! Elijah was discouraged to the point of wanting to die which is just where Satan wanted him to be (and us with him). Turn your focus to faith of God and move from where you are to where He has called you to be.

-- Discouragement can tempt us to fear and run from our responsibilities:

“And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, ‘What doest thou here, Elijah?’” (1 Kings 19:9 KJV). God is essentially saying, “Dude, what you are doing cowering here in fear when I am your salvation and hope?! Get out of there!”

Where should we turn when depressed/discouraged? God first always, then...

-- Each other (fellowship – “back up”): Ecclesiastes 4:9-12; Proverbs 27:10 in the NLT says in part “Never abandon a friend…”

Can God relate to our depression? You bet!

What about depression caused by our past mistakes and sin? God promises to intervene if we would but repent and place our whole faith/trust in Him!

Finally, what does God want your mind-set to be when you are in a difficult trial and in depression due to same?

-- James 1:2-4

-- 1 Corinthians 10:13

-- Philippians 4:11-13
Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content... I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Christians also need to know that, when we are at our weakest and lowest, we are actually at our highest (2 Cor. 12:9–10)! We need the assurance that even in the midst of depression, our dear Lord is drawn to us in our pain (Isa. 57:15; 66:1–2; Ps. 34:17–18), is suffering along with us (Heb. 4:15; Isa. 63:7–11), and is working even our defeats and failures towards a blessed and eternal conclusion (Rom. 8:28; Phil. 1:6; John 6:37–40)!

Lastly, the essential here is that God’s solution to depression can only be had by repenting of our sins, seeking His forgiveness, and entering into a life-saving/life-changing personal relationship with God in Christ. Obedience!

The concept of obedience has been very much on my heart of late (for review, see my March 24th post on the subject) and that theme was driven home again this past weekend during our Calvary South Denver Tuesday Night Dialogue retreat in Estes Park. The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO-Denver was well-represented at the retreat which served as an outstanding, in-depth follow-up to my previous teaching on this all-important subject.

As we approach Easter, it is important to remember that it was our Lord, the greatest "Cop" of all time, who set the example of obedience for us: He was obedient to the Father, even unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8) -- out of supreme love for you and I! Remember also that we are called to obedience to our Supreme Commander through our very commission as peace officers in Romans 13:1. Accordingly, I urge you to go to God in prayer and study by reviewing the following passages in His inerrant word (the Bible): http://www.bible-topics.com/Obedience-to-God.html.

In opening last weekend's retreat, Pastor Sam Park challenged us to a greater level of obedience in our walk with the Lord and correctly wrote, "We enter the land by faith but we it's only through obedience that we can enjoy it." Similarly, Warren Wiersbe wrote, "The Lord has a perfect plan for each of his children but we can claim that blessing only by faith and obedience." Clearly, obedience is a central theme in our marching orders as law enforcement officers. Stay -- don't "stray" -- the course!


Faith-Based Bulletproof Mind Presentation in Tulsa:

I had the honor of assisting Tulsa PD Captain/Ten-Four Ministries (www.TenFourMinistries.org) Director Travis Yates last week in bringing Lt. Col. Dave Grossman to Tulsa for a very special faith-based Bulletproof Mind presentation. Travis did an outstanding job and -- praise God -- more than 500 officers from Oklahoma and surrounding states attended! Dave was very open about his faith and we gave out a ton of ministry materials to the attendees (Note that they had to get by our table to reach Dave's -- talk about tactical positioning!). I am praying about partnering with Travis to bring Col. Grossman to Colorado perhaps next year. More on that to come -- please join me in seeking God's will and direction on this subject.


DENVER-AREA MEETING NEWS: Jim Wattles to Speak!

Furthering our series on obedience, noted outlaw motorcycle gang expert and legendary Colorado officer James "Jimmy" Wattles will give a very special presentation at this week's FCPO-Denver meeting set for Friday, April 15th starting at 7:00 PM in Room 144 at Calvary Chapel Aurora (www.CalvaryAurora.org). Many will remember Jim from the History Channel's Gangland episode on the Sons of Silence OMG. What new readers may not know is that Jim came to Christ not that long ago and I recently had the honor of baptizing him and his bride Terry. Jim has entitled his presentation, "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant" (Matthew 25:23) and it will include some great surprises. ** A colleague in Llano, TX, sends the following: I have a prayer request for a firefighter that was caught in a wildland fire. We have had an extremely bad fire week. He was overrun by fire and left his truck and tried to run needless to say he is in critical condition. He is at the Lubbock burn center. The last news I got was he was not doing well. Pray for his healing and peace for his family.

** Also on the subject of fires, a Park County (CO) deputy sends this: Lynn Griebel requests prayer for her daughters mother & father in law; Clayton & Loraine Brown who lost their home and entire contents over the weekend. A fund has been set up at Omaha Bank in Conifer if you would like to make a donation to them. May they find strength in the Lord during their times of weakness and may they find comfort in knowing we are praying for them.

"10-8" with Christ (part 2): Centurion LE Ministry Newsletter

Fellow Servant-Warriors:

It has been another crazy week so please bear with me as I share what God has placed on my heart over the last few days.

I had the honor of attending Limon (CO) Officer Jay Sheridan’s funeral on Tuesday (3/15). The way we (LEOs) and the community Jay served came out to support his wife, child and colleagues was incredible. Please keep them in prayer.

Jay's tragic death serves as yet another reminder that we MUST have a sense of urgency in sharing the Gospel and message of salvation with our brother and sister officers. Clearly, Jay was a character, a good cop, and a loving husband and father. In short, he was certainly what most might call a “good” man. However (and as I’ve pointed out many times in the past), God has a very different standard and, in the end, His standard is rightfully the ONLY one that counts. His word is clear – that without repenting (confessing, turning/forsaking) from our sin and asking Christ into a life-changing/life-saving relationship (NOT “religion”) – a spiritual rebirth – being “good” by the world’s standard just won’t cut it. It is only after we are "born again" that good works -- the "evidence" of a transformed life -- have a real impact. The rash of LOD deaths in the last few days (CO, NY, VA, FL, etc.) are yet more reminders -- more "2nd chances" if you will -- that we MUST have a sense of urgency about both getting right with God by HIS standard and then responding to our Lord's mandate that we share the “Good News” with others. It does not matter how "safe" we are or how many lives we save if we do not place our trust in Jesus and live for Him in this life. I would again encourage the doubters and skeptics out there to go to http://www.fcpo.org/, click on the “About You” link, and then “Are you a Good Person?” Are you a good person according to God’s standards? You can be -- take the test and find out how -- and do it now! Please join me in praying for our slain brothers' families and colleagues.

Christ our FTO: Message RECAP!

Last Thursday I concluded our look at what it means to be “10-8 with Christ” with a presentation I entitled Christ our FTO. Except for the most grizzled old war horse, most of us serving in law enforcement have been through a field training program under the direction of a Field Training Officer (FTO). Unlike the police world, a Christian’s “field training” never really completely ends (or shouldn’t). However, there are a number of parallels to our walk as Christians with law enforcement field training. Stay with me…

(1) Christ’s Apostles were in “field training” with our Lord for three years (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) before they were sent out (graduated) in the Book of Acts. Likewise, Paul served as a FTO to the Ephesian church for three years as detailed in Acts 20:31. Under both Christ’s and Paul’s leadership we see a biblical term for field training – discipleship.

(2) Paul describes his heart attitude towards those he was “field training” in 1 Thessalonians 2:3-13:

(a) v. 3-6: Paul was single-minded in purpose as he discipled (trained) those under his care.
(b) v. 7-8: Paul cared for his "trainees" in the same way a parent cares for their child.
(c) v. 9-10: Paul the FTO was a role model for those he was training.
(d) v. 11-12: Paul the FTO provided individual attention and instruction (see also Acts 20:31 and Col. 1:28-29).

(e) v. 13: Paul stressed God’s word as the perfect and essential “policy and procedure manual.” See also Eph. 4:11-16.

(3) Paul’s concern for the “officers” he was “field training” went well beyond that of a typical FTO in that he was rightfully committed to their spiritual welfare and growth: II Cor. 11:28-29, 12:15; II Timothy 2:10.

(4) Paul the FTO emulated conviction and passion for the job and served as an outstanding role model (he was not a ROD officer): I Cor. 4:15-16, 11:1; Phil. 3:17, 4:9; I Thess. 1:6-7; II Thess. 3:7-9; II Tim. 3:10-11.

Clearly, the Christian life as revealed in the Bible holds many parallels to the police academy, field training, and our overall law enforcement calling. Romans 13:1-7 gives us our authority and Psalm 82:3-4 serves as an example of our marching orders. The Book of Acts even gives us a great picture of godly “police sergeant” in the person of the Roman centurion Cornelius conducting a briefing (“roll call”) and directing the “officers” he trained to go “10-8” on assignment in chapter 10, verse 8: “10-8” -- with Christ (is that COOL or what??!!). That’s our call folks. Are you walking “10-8” with Christ or are you walking your own way? If the latter, turn to Him today as tomorrow is guaranteed to no one and there is no more time to waste.

Going "10-8" with Christ

Fellow Officers and Supporters:

Another crazy week so please bear with me (and keep me in prayer) as I pound out this week’s newsletter and prepare for tonight's (Thursday) message. Note that the latest PRAYER REQUESTS and MEETING SCHEDULE (the latter being for my FCPO-Denver regulars and visitors) have been posted below (next post) and are updated on a near-daily basis. With that said, last week’s profession-relevant, tactical Bible study on the subject of compromise (Cops & Compromise) was especially timely given the recent ungodly and wholly compromising decision (AKA sin) of our President and the Justice Department to cease defending the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). Let me be perfectly clear as to the position of this ministry on the subject of compromise: on issues of biblical truth, we WON’T; when it comes to issues of opinion, then I’m open to reason (see Isaiah 1:17-20). However, it is my biblical position and that of The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry that God’s inerrant and perfectly sufficient word – the Bible – is our sole standard of truth and we will NOT compromise on it. In short, any argument you may have about biblical truth is with God and not me (my “opinion” doesn’t mean a thing if it is not in alignment with His word). Yes, there are areas of scripture that lend themselves to discussion/debate/interpretation but God’s word generally means EXACTLY what it says. Last week’s study was very much in the latter category. Accordingly…

Study RECAP: Cops & Compromise

Our study focused on two heroes (biblical “cops”) who refused to compromise when it came to God’s clear and loving direction: Nehemiah in Nehemiah 6:1-9 and Daniel in Daniel 1:8-16 and 6:1-10.

In Nehemiah, we see a stalwart warrior literally standing in the gap on Jerusalem’s walls. Nehemiah was faced with both temptation and the threat of death but remained steadfast (uncompromising) in obeying God’s plan. What Nehemiah presents to us today is a picture of a mature believer in Christ who has learned to stand strong in the Lord so that nothing could penetrate his “walls” -- one who is able to withstand any attack by the “enemy” (Satan and his demonic forces). How? We see in Nehemiah a believer who was able to victoriously combat evil, temptation and the pull of “the world” by staying FIXED on God’s plan. In short, Nehemiah stayed the course, relied wholly on God for his strength and provision (But now, O God, strengthen my hands – Nehemiah 6:9) and refused to waiver (compromise).

In the person of Daniel we have another example of a man of purpose who stood strong in the face of overwhelming temptation to compromise. Daniel purposed in his heart to uphold the law of God regardless of the cost (Daniel 1:8); Daniel remained faultless in his business affairs (Daniel 6:1-4); Daniel humbly sought the Lord in prayer and placed his whole trust in Him (Daniel 6:10). The New Testament crossover is found in 1 Timothy 4:12, 1 Thessalonians 5:17-18, and Colossians 4:2.

So what are examples of compromise today? How is it justified? Many will wrongly argue that they can do what they want because it “feels” right to them; that they can decide for themselves what is "right" or wrong. Examples include but are by no means limited to sex outside of marriage, adultery (all kinds of justifying and excuses for both of those), homosexual relationships and the rejection of God’s plan for marriage – the DOMA issue (see http://www.gotquestions.org/gay-marriage.html and http://www.gotquestions.org/homosexuality-Bible.html), flirting (very dangerous territory -- especially for cops), “hanging out” with unbelievers in places neither Christians nor LEOs have any business frequenting, alcohol abuse (yes, getting drunk is SIN), pornography, making “the job” first over God and family, eschewing the fellowship of other believers (AKA “church”), etc.

In short the “world” (Satan; man) tells us that if it “feels” good we can go ahead and do it. However, God’s word in Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 counters with, There is a way that seems right to man (aka “feeling”), but in the end it leads to death. Isaiah 5:20 tells us, Woe to those how call evil good and good evil; who put darkness for light and light for darkness. Our Lord also tells in Acts 5:29 that we are to obey Him rather than the ways of man (society, “the world”). Moreover, it is safe to say that II Corinthians 6:14-17 is not just referring to marriage when it talks about being separate from unbelievers. Finally, I suggest that you review Galatians 5:16-24: So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. The acts of the flesh (compromise/sin) are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. Again, God’s way as opposed to “the world’s” way.

So what about you? Have you been living a life of compromise – living “your way” instead of God’s (the ONLY way)? Cops are often the “kings” (and “queens”) of justification and compromise! I was sure one and, quite frankly, God had to literally kick my prideful, stubborn, backslidden “behind” and break me in order to get my attention. Painful? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely. If that is you today, our Lord is ready to forgive you and bring you into the fold (or BACK into it if you’ve fallen away as I did). Our Father loves you so much that He sent His only Son to die on the cross for you – to pay YOUR just penalty (John 3:16). What does it really mean to “believe” – to repent of your sin and enter into a life-saving/life-changing relationship (NOT “religion”) with Christ as Lord and Savior? Perhaps you think you’re a “good person” (Cops get a “get out of Hell” card and a free “pass” into Heaven – right??) and you can therefore just keep doing it your way. Maybe you think that you can be a “Christian” and keep living in your sinful state in overt violation of God’s law. Regardless, go to http://www.fcpo.org/christian.html and take the “Good Person Test.” Let me know how you do – and know that we’re “here” for you in any way we can be.

My friend Travis Yates put out an interesting review on his blog about the film that I have to agree with -- at least to a point. That said, I really encourage you to go see it...life-changing stuff with a direct relationship to our unique, God-ordained profession.

(4) Finally, this came to me today from a retired New Orleans PD officer:
“I have a friend that was shot and paralyzed from the waist down back in the 1980s. Back then the salary for medical retired cops in New Orleans was very low so he was retired at a low salary and benefits package. I am curious if anyone knows of available benefits for paralyzed cops that helps defer the cost of wheelchairs, wheelchair accessible vehicles and other things one might need to survive. He has the city insurance and a few other things, but it seems that there should be more out there for cops who have given so much. FYI he lost everything during Katrina also and still works as a clerk for NOPD. Please respond to me if you have any ideas.” Contact Jeffreyhochman@aol.com

Warriors Standing in the Gap

The past week has been a tough one for all of us serving in our God-ordained profession and one that adds extra-emphasis to our current theme of having a sense of urgency in LIVING Christ and sharing Him with our families, brother/sister officers, and everyone in general (Matthew 28:19). As many know, we’ve had eleven officers shot in the last two days alone. One of those, Indianapolis Metro PD Officer David Moore, passed away this morning and another’s life hangs by a thread in Oregon (PRAY!).

My good friend and fellow LEO ministry leader Travis Yates (Tulsa PD Captain and Director of Ten-Four Ministries) put these latest events in great perspective in his latest Centurion Papers newsletter. While you’re at it, please pray for Travis’s son who was recently seriously injured and hospitalized.

Bottom line is that we are in fact “at war” with sin/evil and those who would otherwise create anarchy. It is for this reason that we must be ever-ready both personally in our relationship with Christ (being right with God) and in our attention to our warrior skills (physical and mental readiness). We in law enforcement are called by God to “stand in the gap” to protect and lead our nation, communities and families from a common enemy -- not just sin itself but Satan's hosts as well. Accordingly, I was strongly led to make “standing in the gap” the theme of this week’s profession-relevant Bible study. Message RECAP: Isaiah – a Cop’s Story!

Last week’s profession relevant study centered on the biblical prophet Isaiah as detailed in the Old Testament Book of Isaiah as well as passages in II Kings and II Chronicles. The outstanding resource GotQuestions.org has a short article on Isaiah that lays out a superb biblical foundation: http://www.gotquestions.org/life-Isaiah.html.

Of particular relevance to us in law enforcement is Isaiah 6:8 which reads, Then I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me!” Another great partner in law enforcement ministry, Georgia Deputy Dale Henderson of Centurion’s Faith (http://www.centurionsfaith.org/), wrote a super article on the subject of Isaiah being both a great cop and an powerful role model for all of us. In concluding his article, Dale wrote, "Nearly three thousand years ago, God looked out over a sea of humanity, sin, lawlessness and depravation and asked a question, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” Isaiah said, “Here I am. Send me!” Today, it’s the same question, “Who?” My answer, “Here I am send me!” I will gladly Answer The Call. Furthermore, I ask, “If not me, then who?” Well said Dale!

I have a most relevant quote from Isaiah as part of my own email signature: The LORD will go forth like a warrior, He will arouse His zeal like a man of war. He will utter a shout, yes, He will raise a war cry. He will prevail against His enemies. Isaiah 42:13. While the Bible says nothing of how Isaiah’s earthly life ended (Jewish tradition holds that Isaiah was sawn in half by his enemies -- followers of an evil king --- whilst trapped inside a hollowed-out tree) which strongly implies that for him – as for us – it is not how he died that matters, but how he lived and served in this life. Similar words adorn the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, DC: "It is not how these officers died that made them heroes, it is how they lived." Let that be OUR call as well…let’s LIVE and serve Christ NOW with all our might and -- like Isaiah -- with boldness and without compromise!

FCPO-Denver News ("stuff" for metro-Denver locals and visitors)!

(1) I've just confirmed our forthcoming monthly meeting (aka “Cop Church” service) at Calvary Chapel Aurora! The first outreach meeting there has been set for Thursday, February 17th at 1900 hours. Like Calvary South Denver Pastor Gino Geraci, Calvary Aurora Pastor Ed Taylor is a huge supporter of law enforcement (his own son is a Colorado State Patrol Trooper) and this is a way to reach more of our brethen in the east metro area (aka "Kansas"). I'll have more details in the coming weeks. We will of course continue to meet weekly as normal but we're simply moving one of those weekly meetings from Calvary South Denver to Calvary Chapel Aurora each month. No, you absolutely do not have to be a Calvary regular to attend (more than half of our "regulars" attend other churches).

(2) Our own Matt Wallenburg led our "cop church service" worship last week. Those who have not been blessed by Matt's music are indeed missing out!

(3) We've had a great response to our first-ever law enforcement baptism service and we're looking at making it an annual event. Pics have been posted on our website and Facebook pages.

To date in 2011, fifteen of our fellow warriors have “given all” serving and protecting with us here in the United States (see http://www.odmp.org/), not to mention our brothers and sisters who’ve given the "full measure" serving in the military against aggression overseas. We've also lost a Canadian brother and many more around the world (ours is an international brotherhood). Sadly, others will follow in their footsteps. Let’s keep the families and colleagues of the fallen in prayer while at the same time honoring their memories by boldly living for our Lord in the here and now. Finally, be sure to put on both the whole armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18) along with our physical body armor as we stay the course and finish strong in Christ!

Jim has been involved in foreign missions on several continents - including three years as Chief of Training for Iraqi police cadets - and is well-prepared to deal with cross-cultural differences. An Uncompromising New Year

Fellow Sheepdogs:

Most of us – by the grace of God -- survived the Christmas weekend (Anyone else notice that you duty rig seems to have shrunk??!) and are preparing for the next wave starting this Friday (New Year’s Eve) with the standard fair of drug and alcohol-induced carnage. This year our LODD are up at least forty percent over the 2009 totals and we lost four more fellow officers over the Christmas weekend alone (not including all who were injured). This begs the question, “Are you ready?” If your earthly life ended today, where would you spend eternity? Perhaps you think you’re “good enough” to get a “pass” into Heaven due to your LE service or otherwise. I touched on this subject in my newsletters leading up to Christmas and some of my readers have taken me to task for it. Let me say that your argument is not with me but rather with God. Moreover, this ministry will NOT compromise on matters of biblical truth. Tulsa PD Captain and fellow law enforcement ministry brother Travis Yates of Ten-Four Ministries (http://tenfourministries.org/) sent me the following article on the subject that is both disturbing and eye-opening: http://www.sermonaudio.com/new_details.asp?ID=30706. My own reaction was a huge “WOW!” Bottom line is this: it does not matter what you and I “believe” if what we believe does not line up with God’s inerrant word (aka, the Bible). The only thing that matters is the truth and God’s word is the personification of truth. Accordingly, this will be the subject of our year-end Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO-Denver Bible study this Thursday, December 30th, starting at 7:00 PM at Calvary South Denver in Littleton. I’ll post a detailed recap in next week’s newsletter for all our readers everywhere else…stay tuned!

** BAPTISM Service! We will have our first-ever (hopefully “1st Annual”) baptism service on Saturday, January 15th. This will be for officers and their family members who have accepted Christ as Savior but have not yet been baptized. No, infant baptism is not a biblical concept. Those interested need to shoot me an email ASAP to fullarmor911@yahoo.com. I will also be teaching on baptism at our Thursday, January 13th meeting and I’ll need a headcount by the 6th of January.

Benavidez and his heroic action in Vietnam that earned him the Medal of Honor.
