Area LEOs and their spouses now have at least three different fellowships that they can attend and we continue to encourage you to join us. This kind of fellowship is a biblical mandate -- we look forward to seeing and challenging you.

God's Unique Gifts to Cops: The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO Newsletter

A Cop's Strength: The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO Newsletter

Let's exercise sound officer safety while at the same time throwing it to the wind in terms of sharing the love and plan of Christ with our own in His ordained profession (Romans 13:1-7) of law enforcement.

To Serve & Protect
We had outstanding attendance at last week's pre-Easter study where I shared a message entitled, "Cops Pounding Nails." As usual, I've posted my recap below -- feel free to use/adapt to your own studies and devotions.

Cops Pounding Nails -- An Easter Message
Last week I gave my annual profession-relevant Easter message via an expository, inductive study of Mark 15 that followed my obligatory viewing of The Passion of the Christ. In addition to our primary text in Mark, I strongly encourage you to take the time to review the related passages in the other three gospels (Matthew, Luke and John).
What is the application for us today? It was a 1st century SWAT team that came to arrest an innocent Jesus on a trumped-up warrant (no probable cause), after which our Lord faced false-charges, perjury and abuse before "courts" in three different jurisdictions; 1st century LEOs inflicting excruciating torture (imagine being sent to a training or academy class that certifies you to inflict maximum punishment -- scourging -- to a point just short of death); and finally cops nailing our Savior to a cross where He would take on the sins of the very officers who placed Him there.
That there was a man named "Jesus" who was tried, tortured and executed on a cross and placed in a supposedly "escape proof" tomb that was found empty three days later is a historical FACT that is not in dispute even by the most "learned" (sic) of skeptics (see Is the Story of Easter Really True). However, this rock-solid EVIDENCE (as LEOs we're all about the evidence) is a matter of history and not of faith. On this S. Michael Houdman of www.GotQuestions.org writes, "There is a big difference in stating that Jesus of Nazareth was put to death by Pontius Pilate in the first century and his body is still missing to this day, and saying that Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, through the predetermined plan of God died a substitutionary death for humanity, and was resurrected to restore spiritual life to dead, helpless sinners so that they may have eternal life. The first statement is history, the second is the gospel. And the latter requires faith to believe."
The bottom line? It was us -- peace officers/warriors -- that nailed our Savior to a cross. He allowed us (yes -- you and I and not just our counterparts in AD 33) to torture and murder Him so that He could bear our sin and shame on that humiliating instrument of pain and death. God's love, grace and patience for those of us He has called to serve and protect (Romans 13:1-4) is nothing short of miraculous and a testament of God's love and mercy. Moreover, it was a police officer of Jesus' day -- a Roman Centurion standing at the foot of the cross and exclaiming his faith in light of overwhelming evidence -- that is generally considered to be the first Gentile convert to what we call "Christianity" (Matthew 27:54)!
California officer Michael Asplund wrote an outstanding piece that is the perfect accompaniment to this study: Pounding Nails. Please take the time to read and apply it to your life. The message of Easter is truly, "Three nails, three days, ONE WAY (the ONLY way) to God."
Like the Centurion (a cop and the namesake for this ministry) at the cross, my hope and prayer is that you too will examine the evidence and respond in faith. How? Scroll down the left side of this website to links under How Can I Be Saved (aka True "Officer Safety". I implore you -- repent of your sin and turn to the ONLY One who can save you. Chad Williams, a former Navy SEAL who became a born-again Christian during his time of service, will be speaking at Calvary South Denver in Littleton on May 19th, starting at 7 PM. Chad has authored a book entitled SEAL of God and is now serving as the high school ministry leader at Greg Laurie's church in Irvine, CA.
Chad will share his powerful testimony and experiences as a SEAL along with a message of salvation and the truth of what Jesus Christ did for us on the cross.
The event is FREE and we encourage you to bring your unsaved family members, friends and colleagues (LEOs and combat military personnel in particular).

(3) "SamKwanDo and the Dojo of Truth"
Yes, a little humor there in reference to Pastor Sam Park (a Korean-born martial artist) and our powerful Tuesday night TRUTH services at Calvary South Denver. Highly recommended! Quite a few officers and their spouses who are a part of our TCLEM/FCPO fellowship also attend this service and both Diana and I serve there weekly. Great worship, powerful Bible teaching and an opportunity to say "yes" or otherwise get right with Christ every week. The teachings are also available online (email me for details).
(4) Men's Prayer Breakfast! Calvary South Denver, 8 AM, April 21st, 2012.

"Act of Valor" Event! TCLEM/FCPO-Denver Newsletter
We had an outstanding time of fellowship, prayer and profession-relevant Bible study at last week's Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry & FCPO-Denver "Cop Church" meeting. Our own Jim Wattles led an very interactive and thought-provoking message that he entitled "Expected Virtues." As always, I've posted the recap below and encourage you to adapt it to your own devotions and studies.
This week's "meeting" will be a group event to see the new movie, Act of Valor. If you're in the south Denver area, please consider joining us for the 6:45 PM showing at the AMC Highlands Ranch 24 theater just south of C-470 and Broadway (103 W Centennial Blvd., Highlands Ranch, CO). We'll meet at 6:15 inside the main entrance at the bottom of the escalator.
For everyone else around the country, we're encouraging you to see this movie with your spouse, a fellow officer, service member and/or your those in your local fellowship. As stated previously, this is NOT a "Christian" film but, as detailed in last week's newsletter, it DOES serve as a "hook" for that officer or military brother/sister who may not know Christ as Savior and would not otherwise see a movie like Courageous: it opens a door for you to share!
As I reported last week, two former Navy SEALs have formed a companion website to Act of Valor called Life of Valor (www.lifeofvalor.com) that DOES have a powerful biblical message. Accordingly, review their site, last week's newsletter for more.
Message RECAP: A Cop's "Expected Virtues"
Here is Jim's recap from last week's message:
What is your reputation? What are your personal virtues? Do you sometimes feel like there is too much expected of you to the point that you find yourself asking, "Who do they think I am...some sort of superhuman?"
Cops are "expected" to carry out duties that quite literally come from real-life biblical figures. Among just a few of those things cops are "expected" to have are the:
* Strength of Samson
* Wisdom of Solomon
* Patience of Job
* Aim of David
* Leadership skills of Moses
* Foresight of Noah
* Honesty of Jesus
* Mercy of God.
A cop's reputation may be both favorable and unfavorable, depending on who is expressing their opinion. Our reputation is most generally decided by how we are viewed in terms of our character, honesty, reliability, strengths, weaknesses and achievements. Most of those character traits are developed by one's personal virtues, or moral character. Cops are "expected" to possess the highest of moral standards as they carry out their duties but most of us fall far short of the ideal. However, the "Good News" -- especially for the Christian officer -- is that many of these virtues can be learned and improved upon.
Simon Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:5-7, But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. The first thing Peter tells us to add to our faith is virtue -- an essential trait in making us more effective in living like Christ. Pastor Charles Spurgeon said, "The two most important things in our holy religion are faith and life." He added there is "an intimate connection" between the two and "they shouldn't be severed; God hath so joined them."
Does your reputation and "expected virtues" differ within the ranks of your fellow officers and those held among members of you family, your church and the community where you serve? Yes they do. Many officers who enjoy a great reputation and are considered to be virtuous by their fellow officers, family and church may have quite a different reputation among those in the community they serve in that the latter may see us as hateful, prejudicial, brutal, unforgiving, lying or just generally untrustworthy. This reputation is often the result of one or more incidents of cops using offensive language, losing their temper or displaying otherwise improper behavior, which then becomes the generalized reputation of officers everywhere. Do we as LEOs sometimes abuse the powers given to us by God as revealed in Romans 13:1-7? While God has been given us the authority to take a life, liberty and property, that authority sometimes be abused.
When most of us were sworn in, we took an oath, placed our hand on a Bible (?) and may have repeated the words, "So help me God." Romans 13:1-7 reveals that even if those four words are omitted and the Bible no longer present, we were still making a promise to God along with the responsibility to honor that promise.
Whether you view your law enforcement position as a "calling" or just a job, we all need to realize that we are under the watchful eyes of God, those of our fellow officers, our families and the citizens we serve. Go back to the advice of Simon Peter and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to improve your faith, moral excellence (virtue), knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, kindness and love. Watch how your life and the lives of others will change around you. See if it doesn't make your life more effective and useful to Him, to the citizens you serve and to the family you provide for. Serving as a Christian officers is by no means easy but stay encouraged by Galatians 6:9 -- And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
I would add the following to Jim's final line: for the believer, we can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

As stated previously, this is NOT a "Christian" film but, as detailed in last week's newsletter, it DOES serve as a "hook" for that officer or military brother/sister who may not know Christ as Savior and would not otherwise see a movie like Courageous: it opens a door for you to share!

Message RECAP: A Cop's "Expected Virtues"
Here is Jim's recap from last week's message:
What is your reputation? What are your personal virtues? Do you sometimes feel like there is too much expected of you to the point that you find yourself asking, "Who do they think I am...some sort of superhuman?"
Cops are "expected" to carry out duties that quite literally come from real-life biblical figures. Among just a few of those things cops are "expected" to have are the:
* Strength of Samson
* Wisdom of Solomon
* Patience of Job
* Aim of David
* Leadership skills of Moses
* Foresight of Noah
* Honesty of Jesus
* Mercy of God.
A cop's reputation may be both favorable and unfavorable, depending on who is expressing their opinion. Our reputation is most generally decided by how we are viewed in terms of our character, honesty, reliability, strengths, weaknesses and achievements. Most of those character traits are developed by one's personal virtues, or moral character. Cops are "expected" to possess the highest of moral standards as they carry out their duties but most of us fall far short of the ideal. However, the "Good News" -- especially for the Christian officer -- is that many of these virtues can be learned and improved upon.
Simon Peter wrote in 2 Peter 1:5-7, But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. The first thing Peter tells us to add to our faith is virtue -- an essential trait in making us more effective in living like Christ. Pastor Charles Spurgeon said, "The two most important things in our holy religion are faith and life." He added there is "an intimate connection" between the two and "they shouldn't be severed; God hath so joined them."
Does your reputation and "expected virtues" differ within the ranks of your fellow officers and those held among members of you family, your church and the community where you serve? Yes they do. Many officers who enjoy a great reputation and are considered to be virtuous by their fellow officers, family and church may have quite a different reputation among those in the community they serve in that the latter may see us as hateful, prejudicial, brutal, unforgiving, lying or just generally untrustworthy. This reputation is often the result of one or more incidents of cops using offensive language, losing their temper or displaying otherwise improper behavior, which then becomes the generalized reputation of officers everywhere. Do we as LEOs sometimes abuse the powers given to us by God as revealed in Romans 13:1-7? While God has been given us the authority to take a life, liberty and property, that authority sometimes be abused.
When most of us were sworn in, we took an oath, placed our hand on a Bible (?) and may have repeated the words, "So help me God." Romans 13:1-7 reveals that even if those four words are omitted and the Bible no longer present, we were still making a promise to God along with the responsibility to honor that promise.
Whether you view your law enforcement position as a "calling" or just a job, we all need to realize that we are under the watchful eyes of God, those of our fellow officers, our families and the citizens we serve. Go back to the advice of Simon Peter and ask the Holy Spirit to help you to improve your faith, moral excellence (virtue), knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, kindness and love. Watch how your life and the lives of others will change around you. See if it doesn't make your life more effective and useful to Him, to the citizens you serve and to the family you provide for. Serving as a Christian officers is by no means easy but stay encouraged by Galatians 6:9 -- And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
I would add the following to Jim's final line: for the believer, we can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).

A Cop's "Expected Virtues"

We had yet another powerful time of servant-warrior fellowship, prayer and profession-relevant Bible study as I taught on what it means to live "A Life of Valor." As stated previously, the inspiration for this study was the new film Act of Valor that opened last Friday. Now to be clear, this is definitely NOT a "Christian" film but is nevertheless being recommended -- albeit with some reservations -- by a number of respected Christian groups because there are a plethora of "teachable moments" for us. Moreover the film is a "hook" for the Christian officer/military personnel to share God's truth's with our unsaved and "fence-riding" colleagues. See my RECAP (below) for the details!
This Thursday, March 1st, our own Jim Wattles (retired Denver PD detective and Colorado State Investigator-turned-chaplain with the Colorado State Patrol) will be teaching a message he's entitled "Expected Virtues." What the Holy Spirit has led Jim to share has tremendous applicability to both what we do as cops AND in our Christian "walk" in general. Message Recap: A Life of Valor
Both as peace officers and/or as combat military personnel, the concept of valor carries great meaning with us. That said, one does not have to an elite operator to live a life of valor. In fact, the Bible reveals that God is calling each of His children to be mighty men and women of valor - to live bold, radical, sanctified and victorious lives for Him regardless -- even in spite of -- our circumstances, trials and tribulations.
Let's define the word from a biblical standpoint: both the Hebrew (chayil, pronounced khah'-yil) and the Greek (arete -- ar-et'-ay) words for valor have virtually the same meaning and carry with it significant military/law enforcement connotations to both physical and spiritual warfare. While the Bible uses the word in conjunction with martial might and prowess, it is almost always with the understanding that it is God who provides the strength and power as opposed to man relying on his/her own skills.
The primary passage God gave me for this study is II Samuel 23:8-39 along with a quick re-visit (from recent studies) to Judges 6:11-12.
In the first passage we see who David chose to be his personal Mighty Men of Valor. They included just thirty-seven "elite operators" who would faithfully charge into battle against impossible odds and defend their king until the very end - even "unto death." Were these men perfect? Not by a longshot. However, like the elite Navy SEALs, David's mighty men possessed a sense of loyalty and service that transcended all else in their lives.
An example of this loyalty is found within the events that occurred between King David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11. Bathsheba's husband -- Uriah the Hittite -- was one of David's elite "SEAL Team" members -- one of the aforementioned Mighty Men of Valor. When David attempted to cover up his sin with Bathsheba by bringing Uriah home from the front so that he could sleep with his wife, Uriah showed his loyalty and sense of duty by instead sleeping at the king's door rather than with Bathsheba because he felt it was not right to be with her while his own brothers-at-arms were still in harm's way. Uriah's loyalty, combined with David's sin, ultimately resulted in this mighty man of valor's untimely death.
It is interesting to note that God knows our abilities and talents to be His Mighty Men of Valor prior to us identifying them. In Judges 6:11-12, we find God clearly telling Gideon that he is a mighty man of valor: "The Angel of the Lord (speaking for God) came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites [hiding in fear]. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, "The Lord is with you, mighty man of valor."
It is safe to say that Gideon didn't "feel" very mighty or had much valor (or as the New International Version says, mighty warrior) when the Lord gave him his marching orders. On the contrary, just the opposite appears to be true.
So what is the lesson(s) for us here? When we look at scripture in context the picture becomes clear: God's standard for his elite warriors is often very different from "man's" standards and He goes out of His way to insure that His servant-warriors understand that their power, their skills, their "might" and their success all come from Him and not of themselves (II Samuel 22:33 - God is my strength and power... -- KJV).
Part of the SEAL Code is:
•Loyalty to Country, Team and Teammate (you never leave your "swim buddy").
•Serve with Honor and Integrity.
•Ready to Lead, Ready to Follow.
•Never Quit!
•Take Responsibility for your actions and the actions of your teammates.
•Excel as warriors through Discipline and Innovation.
•Train for War, Fight to Win (our training is never complete).
•Defeat our Nation's enemies.
These principles have a correlation in scripture in that God is calling His mighty men of valor -- the Christian peace officer and Christian in general -- to be:
•"All in" in our loyalty and obedience to Him. Being a Christian means giving ALL of ourselves to the Lord.
•We can't go it alone - we are COMMANDED to be part of a team - to be united and strengthened in fellowship (church, our weekly meetings, etc.) with one another. Like a lone SEAL or the officer without cover, the all- alone Christian is a sitting duck for the enemy (for the SEAL, being alone equates with death). Team integrity and unity are absolute essentials.
•Serve Him with honor and integrity with the understanding that we are NEVER "off duty."
•God is calling us to true servant-leadership and true servant-hood (followers of "The Way").
•We too are to never quit (or, to quote Eliot Ness's character in The Untouchables, "Never stop, never stop fighting till the fight is done."). There is a spiritual war raging and we have been given spiritual armor that should never be removed (Ephesians 6:10-20).
•Take responsibility for our sin and seek repentance from the ONLY one who can give it. Be accountable for your own actions and for those of our partners and teammates - both cops and other Christians alike.
•Pursue excellence in all we do for His glory (1 Cor. 10:31 and others).
•Train relentlessly through the study of His Word (the Bible), prayer and Proverbs 27:17 fellowship). Understand that our training will never be complete so long as we have breath.
•Stand firm in the power of the Holy Spirit to defeat our enemy (Satan and his legions) with the conviction that the battle is His (2 Chronicles 20:15 and others) and our victory sure (1 Cor. 15:57-58).
Two former Navy SEALs who are also committed Christians have formed an evolving new companion ministry called Life of Valor (www.lifeofvalor.com) to the Act of Valor film that provides some excellent resources to help you understand "the mission" and call of the Christian servant-warrior. Take the time to check it out, write your code, pray for God's guidance and get in "the fight." With these tools in hand, also pray about seeing this film through a biblical "lens" and then discuss it with your teammates and those in the FCPO chapters or PeaceKeeper Bible study groups in which you serve and lead. This film can in fact serve as a powerful "hook" to share Christ with others. In fact, my FCPO-Denver chapter will be headed "to the movies" on March 8th to do just that!
Again, one does not have to be a SEAL, part of a Special Forces unit, SWAT team or even a regular LEO to have valor. On the contrary, God is calling YOU -- all of us -- to live a life of valor for Him through the power of the Holy Spirit. How? That kind of valor comes only from being in a life-saving/life-changing RELATIONSHIP (not "religion") with God in Christ. Are you ready to be "all in" for the Lord - to be one of His chosen few? Know that Christ Himself is knocking on the "door" of your heart and waiting for you to answer so that you can begin the grandest adventure of all. Looking for a Sign -- Centurion LE Ministry Newsletter

We had a great time of interactive Bible study and fellowship at last Thursdays TCLEM/FCPO "Cop Church" meeting. Jim Wattles' teaching entitled A Cop's Battleground (aka Christian Life is a Battleground) elicited a good deal of discussion. Jim's primary text was the whole of Jude (the whole "book" is just a single chapter -- read it through to understand the context). Interestingly enough, Jude may have been a favorite of the Beatles (get it:)! Message RECAP: Christian Life is a Battleground
Pastor Gino Geraci of Calvary South Denver in Littleton, Colorado (www.CalvaryCSD.org) recently spoke about "apostasy." I listened as he told us that the "Christian life is a battlefield" and that it is "not for cowards." I wasn't really sure what the definition of apostasy was, but the lesson kept my attention as it kept reminding me of the duties of law enforcement officers in ferreting out evil doers. When I got home, I looked it up and learned that it comes from the Greek word apostasis, which means desertion or revolt, but more commonly it is used to describe the abandonment of one's religious faith or a deliberate falling away and rejection of truth.
Those of us who have committed ourselves to Christ should know exactly what Pastor Gino meant when he described our lives as a "battleground." As Christians, we find our faith being questioned and ridiculed more and more. To this day in many countries around the world, Christians are imprisoned, beaten and murdered because of their faith. In the US, we aren't yet so concerned about being murdered, but biblical beliefs and practices are in fact being attacked by the media and through lawsuits filed by atheist/agnostic groups and eroded through the decay of Christian values (we are told that we must become more "tolerant" of things we know are sinful). Sadly, many churches today have watered down their messages and actually preach "tolerance" in opposition to God's inerrant Word (praise God, His truth never changes).
As law enforcement officers, we understand the courage it requires to chase after a man who is shooting at you, or the courage it takes to stand up against a violent group who far outnumbers you, but do we have the courage to stand up to people who are attempting to take away our Christian beliefs or even attempt to make them "illegal" under man's law?
Jude 1:4 says, For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jude 1:5 says, But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
The late Pastor Charles Spurgeon said, "This would be the first step in apostasy; men first forget the truth and then adore the false." Moreover, some of the worst offenders -- apostates -- seem to be those men and women who claim to be former "Christians."

Even today, a federal appeals court in California wickedly ruled that marriage is no longer defined by God's law (between a man and woman) but rather by their own -- Proposition 8 Overturned! God spoke to us about this very thing in Isaiah 5:20: Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
God's call to us both as Christians and as cops is to STAND (Ephesians 6:13) on His Word by the power of the Holy Spirit against the enemies arrayed on the battleground before us. Rak chazak! Be not afraid -- be strong and courageous -- the Lord of hosts will lead us (Zechariah 4:6)! So will you?

We had a great time of interactive Bible study and fellowship at last Thursdays TCLEM/FCPO "Cop Church" meeting. Jim Wattles' teaching entitled A Cop's Battleground (aka Christian Life is a Battleground) elicited a good deal of discussion. Jim's primary text was the whole of Jude (the whole "book" is just a single chapter -- read it through to understand the context). Interestingly enough, Jude may have been a favorite of the Beatles (get it:)! Message RECAP: Christian Life is a Battleground
Pastor Gino Geraci of Calvary South Denver in Littleton, Colorado (www.CalvaryCSD.org) recently spoke about "apostasy." I listened as he told us that the "Christian life is a battlefield" and that it is "not for cowards." I wasn't really sure what the definition of apostasy was, but the lesson kept my attention as it kept reminding me of the duties of law enforcement officers in ferreting out evil doers. When I got home, I looked it up and learned that it comes from the Greek word apostasis, which means desertion or revolt, but more commonly it is used to describe the abandonment of one's religious faith or a deliberate falling away and rejection of truth.
Those of us who have committed ourselves to Christ should know exactly what Pastor Gino meant when he described our lives as a "battleground." As Christians, we find our faith being questioned and ridiculed more and more. To this day in many countries around the world, Christians are imprisoned, beaten and murdered because of their faith. In the US, we aren't yet so concerned about being murdered, but biblical beliefs and practices are in fact being attacked by the media and through lawsuits filed by atheist/agnostic groups and eroded through the decay of Christian values (we are told that we must become more "tolerant" of things we know are sinful). Sadly, many churches today have watered down their messages and actually preach "tolerance" in opposition to God's inerrant Word (praise God, His truth never changes).
As law enforcement officers, we understand the courage it requires to chase after a man who is shooting at you, or the courage it takes to stand up against a violent group who far outnumbers you, but do we have the courage to stand up to people who are attempting to take away our Christian beliefs or even attempt to make them "illegal" under man's law?
Jude 1:4 says, For certain men have crept in unnoticed, who long ago were marked out for this condemnation, ungodly men, who turn the grace of our God into lewdness and deny the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jude 1:5 says, But I want to remind you, though you once knew this, that the Lord, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.
The late Pastor Charles Spurgeon said, "This would be the first step in apostasy; men first forget the truth and then adore the false." Moreover, some of the worst offenders -- apostates -- seem to be those men and women who claim to be former "Christians."

A Cop's Church, A Cop's Battleground: Newsletter for 01/31/2012
Fellow Servant-Warriors:
This Thursday (February 2nd), law enforcement legend James "Jimmy" Wattles will be sharing a message we've entitled A Cop's Battleground. It goes hand-in-hand with my devotional/resource this week (see below) -- A Cop's Church. I will also be posting some excellent links, events, and a plethora of other new "411" here on our website (stay tuned). Please take the time to read/study and then pass it on to others. In addition to our regular "cop church" meetings, those in the Denver area should also consider joining many of our Centurion LE Ministry regulars for tonight's (Tuesday) unique service at Calvary South Denver. We have great worship, outstanding teaching (Pastor Sam is currently taking us through Revelation) and even dinner tonight! We start at 7 PM -- hope to see you there.
A Cop's Church
As police officers/warriors, we will willingly and courageously charge into burning buildings (we're almost always there before the fire department -- LOL), run TO the sound of gunfire, take on rioting crowds, "leap tall buildings," jump out of perfectly good aircraft and generally place our lives on the line daily. That said, perhaps nothing can incite more fear or disinterest in cops than the idea of spending a couple of hours hanging out at a church (although not just any church). My purpose here is share God's will for us as it relates to "church" AND provide the resources to help officers choose a solid Bible-teaching place of worship for themselves and their families.
Why Church?
God provides the (THE) answer in His inerrant word -- the Bible. My friends at GotQuestions.org have posted a great series of short articles on this subject that I strongly encourage you to read, study and pray about: www.gotquestions.org/church-attendance.html (and the articles that follow it). The biblical direction (commands/mandates) revealed in these articles form part of the foundation of why we (The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry, the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers, etc.) come together for fellowship, Bible study and prayer. Now please understand that -- especially for those of us working nights, weekends and holidays -- we are NOT relegated to worshipping only on Sundays. Our own Thursday evening "meetings" have been dubbed "cop church" by more than a few of my regulars inasmuch it is the only day of the week when they are free (although I do not believe that our meetings should replace regular church attendance with your spouse and kids) and many solid places of worship have services multiple days of the week. Bottom line is that a Christian can't grow in their faith unless they are attending a solid, Bible-teaching church for iron sharpens iron fellowship, worship, support, accountability and ESSENTIAL Bible teaching. Again, church attendance -- in whatever form it takes -- is not optional for the believer but rather a loving command from our Lord as revealed in Hebrews 10:24-25 (And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching).

Choosing the right church is perhaps one of the most important decisions anyone can make. Based on our Lord's direction in His Word, I recommend a church that is lead by a pastor who is a true shepherd (and not just a teacher) and is devoted to the Word (Bible); has great worship music that points folks to the Lord as opposed to those leading it; has a heart for leading folks to the Lord (evangelism); and is absolutely rock solid in matters of essential biblical doctrine. Take the time to check out the church's website. Two great examples are the churches I serve at: Calvary Aurora (www.calvaryaurora.org) and Calvary South Denver (www.calvarycsd.org). Look for an "About Us" section and information about the pastor's background. Attend a service or two and spend some time vetting the church in general (child care, youth and counseling services, etc.). Google the church and see what comes up.
What about denominations? Note that while I have nothing against denominations per se, I would caution folks about any church "tradition" or teaching that goes against God's word (the Bible) in ANY way. Moreover, I can't urge you enough to AVOID churches that are clearly outside of historical biblical Christianity such as the LDS/Mormons, Jehovah's Witnesses, churches that are part of the false emergent church (www.gotquestions.org/emerging-church-emergent.html and "word of faith" (www.gotquestions.org/Word-Faith.html ) movements, etc.

Radical Cops, Radical Christians
We had a great time of fellowship, prayer and warrior-relevant Bible study at last week’s Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO-Denver “cop church” meeting. Police legend Jim Wattles (now a fellow chaplain as well) led us in a lively discussion about what it means to be an “overcomer.” I’ve posted Jim’s RECAP below – feel free to adapt it for your own studies and devotions.
Jim’s study serves as the first of a three-part mini-series. Tomorrow I’ll be teaching Part 2 in a study I’ve entitled “Radical Cops, Radical Christians.” What is a “radical?” Is God calling us to be “radical” in our service as cops and in our walk as believers? What do you think (for example) of Tim Tebow’s “radical” faith? More importantly, what does God say on the subject? We’ll explore these and other questions together this Thursday (tomorrow), January 5th, starting at 7 PM at Calvary South Denver in Littleton (www.calvarycsd.org for directions). Message Recap: “OVERCOMER or OVERTAKEN” by Jim Wattles
In the book, The Kingdom, Power and Glory -- The Overcomer's Handbook, authors Chuck and Nancy Missler define an “overcomer” this way: “Overcomers” are faithful, obedient and persevering believers, who live the lives of Christ, who share His love, depend on His wisdom and are empowered by His spirit. They are not perfect, but recognize their choices and know how to go God's way. They know how to overcome the world by faith in the Word of God and they allow Him to live His life out in them. My personal opinion differs in that I believe the weight of scripture reveals that those of us that are “saved” and are “raptured” will all one day return to rule and reign with Jesus Christ in His Millennial Kingdom. The use of the word “overcome” in Rev 3:21, Rev 21:7, Rev 2:7 and Rev 2:26 comes from the Greek word “nikao,” meaning “victory over hostile forces” and not the definition used by Missler. I am not here to argue with the Misslers but rather encourage you to do your own research and develop you own opinions based on God’s Word alone (Acts 17:11 reminds us to search the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so).
However, I do agree with Missler's premise that each of us should strive to be an “overcomer.” Be someone who is not satisfied with just being saved and being assured of eternal life in heaven, but being someone who pursues a more purposeful temporal life here, as well as a more purposeful eternal life. God is calling us to be overcomers: to do more than the minimum, to be “then some” cops and Christians. We all know of those officers who Missler would describe as having been “overtaken” -- those who are disloyal, disobedient and lazy; those who constantly complain, are unproductive and present themselves in such a way that they are an embarrassment to other officers and their departments.
Many Christians learn quickly they can't do enough and want to do more to live their lives in Christ, but others find themselves “overtaken.” We all should desire to be “overcomers” and to yield ourselves fully to Christ. We may be called to suffer for Him (Rom 8:17; Phil 1:29); never deny Him (2 Tim 2:12); always be faithful to Him (Matt 24:45) and love Him (James 2:5). James 1:22 says, “But be doers of the Word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.”
Are you an “overcomer” or have you been “overtaken”? Do you know someone who has been “overtaken” and in need of your prayers and encouragement?
Being an “overcomer” can be contagious -- and so can being “overtaken.” Live your life as an “overcomer” so that those around you can clearly see your strong and positive relationship with God. In Matthew 5:16, Jesus tells us, “Let your light so shine before me, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

Late-Breaking Prayer Requests and Announcements

** Pray for long-time Texas peace officer David Criner as he seeks the elected office of Constable in Midland. Our profession is desperate for godly (Christian) servant-leaders.
** Ryan Pearson, son of Englewood (CO) PD Ofc. Jason Pearson, suffers from some pretty serious asthma issues (he was in the hospital over the weekend) and is in need of prayer.
** Please pray for a colleague in NM who is applying for an investigator position with the state (God's will and favor).
** From fellow FCPO National Board members Paul Lee and a Chuck Urgo: We received a call this morning from Fort Worth K-9 Officer Royce Hearne requesting prayer for his teenage daughter Casey. Casey has had many surgeries since childhood and may have cancerous tumors in her leg now. She will be having a full body MRI on Tuesday. She has always wanted to be a missionary to India. Royce and his wife have an older daughter, Eairn. Keep the whole family in your prayers. Royce is a former member of the FCPO national board.
Let's lift Casey in prayer!
** As many of you know, Angie Hays, wife of retired Denver PD Officer and current pastor and DPD Chaplain Manny Hays has been awaiting a life-saving liver transplant. News had been bad but we serve a great God! Yesterday a compatible liver became available and the surgery took place within hours. Angie is in recovery and doing well. Still long way to go and she is obviously in pain. Please keep our sister-in-Christ in prayer, pray for Manny (3 hours sleep), and for the family of the donor.

A Cop's Thanksgiving -- TCLEM Newsletter
Colleagues:
Yes I know, this week’s newsletter is running late – welcome to my world of juggling family, work and ministry.
First off (for our Denver-area folks/visitors), we are in fact meeting tonight for our once-monthly foray to “western Kansas” (aka, Aurora, CO): 7 PM, Calvary Chapel Aurora (www.CalvaryAurora.org), Room 138. Bring your spouse, invite a colleague, forward this email and join us for a powerful time of profession-relevant fellowship, Bible study and prayer. I’m teaching special I’ve entitled “A Cop’s Thanksgiving.” I’ll also have gift for you from last week’s Jerry Jenkins event but – like with our ministry shirts (free to you) – you gotta come to a meeting to receive it. MESSAGE RECAP:
We had an outstanding and well-attended evening with best-selling author Jerry Jenkins last week. Jerry’s family (dad, brothers, uncles, etc.) include a plethora of cops who served or are serving in the Chicago area and his latest trilogy of Christian fiction centers on the lives of our fellow warriors. His presentation centered on The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry's and FCPO-Denver’s signature passage – Romans 13:1-4 -- along with Psalm 15 and Matthew 5:9. Jerry presented part of his own testimony, his heart for us in law enforcement and the following points (along with a great deal of appropriate humor):
(1) Cops are held to a higher standard and Christian offices doubly so.
(2) Cops are willing to die for others.
(3) Better to be “tried by 12 than buried by 6.”
(4) That it’s unwise to draw enemy fire because it makes your partner nervous.
Jerry also stated that a lie by a cop is more heinous than from just about anyone else because:
(1) It violates the public trust.
(2) Compromises the entire justice system.
(3) Can unjustly put a human being in a cage for the rest of his life.
In addition, Jerry rightly pointed out that it is very tough to share our faith (evangelize) with other cops because of their false belief in “relative goodness” and the equally false idea that we have a free pass out of hell because of the “good” we do for society. The real standard is of course that we must ALL come to Christ in the same way (Ephesians 2:8-9, John 14:6...).
I had the privilege of closing with a salvation message that piggybacked on the false sense of security many offices have. Again, I strongly recommend that everyone take the “Good Person Test” on the FCPO website (www.fcpo.org/christian.html) – let me know how you do! Who are you going to believe – God’s inerrant word or a bogus poem written by an unknown author falsely telling you that you’ve “done your time in hell?”
Jerry B. Jenkins is the most prolific and highest-selling evangelical novelist of our time. He is the author of more than 175 books, including the 63,000,000-selling Left Behind series. In addition to being an incredible author, Jerry also has an outstanding sense of humor and I would recommend him as a speaker to anyone. See his website at www.jerryjenkins.com for more!
Secondly, our own James “Jimmy” Wattles (legendary Denver PD officer, state gaming investigator and now CSP chaplain) recently taught a powerful message for our fellowship followed by an updated version at last Saturday’s Calvary South Denver Men’s Ministry prayer breakfast. As part of his “Gambling with God” message, Jim presented “Ten Keys to Success” for the Christian officer adapted from Poker for Dummies:
(1) Be aware of your strengths and weaknesses: Philippians 4:13(2) Act responsibly: Galatians 6:5
(3) Think: Romans 12:2
(4) Have a plan: Proverbs 3:5
(5) Set deadlines: Ephesians 5:15-6
(6) Be realistic: 1 Corinthians 10:13
(7) Expect difficulties: Matthew 6:34
(8) Build on small accomplishments: Proverbs 3:5-6
(9) Persist: Isaiah 40:31
(10) Have fun: Ecclesiastes 2:24.
Isn’t it cool how God can use an issue like gambling (not recommended) and turn it to good?

A Warrior's Marching Orders -- TCLEM Newsletter

Obedience!
The concept of obedience has been very much on my heart of late (for review, see my March 24th post on the subject) and that theme was driven home again this past weekend during our Calvary South Denver Tuesday Night Dialogue retreat in Estes Park. The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry/FCPO-Denver was well-represented at the retreat which served as an outstanding, in-depth follow-up to my previous teaching on this all-important subject.
As we approach Easter, it is important to remember that it was our Lord, the greatest "Cop" of all time, who set the example of obedience for us: He was obedient to the Father, even unto death on the cross (Philippians 2:8) -- out of supreme love for you and I! Remember also that we are called to obedience to our Supreme Commander through our very commission as peace officers in Romans 13:1. Accordingly, I urge you to go to God in prayer and study by reviewing the following passages in His inerrant word (the Bible): http://www.bible-topics.com/Obedience-to-God.html.
In opening last weekend's retreat, Pastor Sam Park challenged us to a greater level of obedience in our walk with the Lord and correctly wrote, "We enter the land by faith but we it's only through obedience that we can enjoy it." Similarly, Warren Wiersbe wrote, "The Lord has a perfect plan for each of his children but we can claim that blessing only by faith and obedience." Clearly, obedience is a central theme in our marching orders as law enforcement officers. Stay -- don't "stray" -- the course!
Faith-Based Bulletproof Mind Presentation in Tulsa:
I had the honor of assisting Tulsa PD Captain/Ten-Four Ministries (www.TenFourMinistries.org) Director Travis Yates last week in bringing Lt. Col. Dave Grossman to Tulsa for a very special faith-based Bulletproof Mind presentation. Travis did an outstanding job and -- praise God -- more than 500 officers from Oklahoma and surrounding states attended! Dave was very open about his faith and we gave out a ton of ministry materials to the attendees (Note that they had to get by our table to reach Dave's -- talk about tactical positioning!). I am praying about partnering with Travis to bring Col. Grossman to Colorado perhaps next year. More on that to come -- please join me in seeking God's will and direction on this subject.
DENVER-AREA MEETING NEWS: Jim Wattles to Speak!
Furthering our series on obedience, noted outlaw motorcycle gang expert and legendary Colorado officer James "Jimmy" Wattles will give a very special presentation at this week's FCPO-Denver meeting set for Friday, April 15th starting at 7:00 PM in Room 144 at Calvary Chapel Aurora (www.CalvaryAurora.org). Many will remember Jim from the History Channel's Gangland episode on the Sons of Silence OMG. What new readers may not know is that Jim came to Christ not that long ago and I recently had the honor of baptizing him and his bride Terry. Jim has entitled his presentation, "Well Done, Good and Faithful Servant" (Matthew 25:23) and it will include some great surprises. Please join us if you're in the Denver-metro area for this very special event. As always, I'll include a detailed RECAP for everyone else in next week's newsletter -- stay tuned!

-- Be in prayer for a CO Western Slope officer who is facing surgery to repair a damaged shoulder.
-- Another officer is struggling with an infection pursuant to a very complex shoulder surgery -- pray for complete healing and restoration. It is a job-related injurey.
-- PRAISE Report! The bogus Virgin Islands murder charge against ATF Special Agent Will Clark has been dismissed (should never have been filed)! Praise God indeed! I asked for prayer last week for the newborn baby of a fellow officer here in Oregon! I have a wonderful praise report to share from Mom’s Facebook post, and want to ask that we all continue to cover this little angel and his family!
From Mom:
"So......They found out the bacteria that was in Ryker's system is Ecoli. What I'm about to type doesn't even make sense, & the Dr's have no explination for it. Once they found the infection, the very minute PRIOR to starting him on anitbiotics, they did another blood draw. They sent it to the lab to see if it would grow more cultures then the one the night before. It grew nothing. My little 22 day old miracle baby fought off Ecoli infection all by himself! The Dr. couldn't explain it, so the only other think I can thing of, is that we got the miracle we asked for. Thank you all :)."
The awesome power of prayer! Praise God, from whom all blessings flow!!! Pleaese continue to pray for this child and her parents as they are still looking at another 4-6 weeks before discharge.

Pray that I will only say what the Lord wants me to say. Also pray I will be clear in telling others how they can have an eternal impact on our brave men and women in uniform!

Are you a TRUE Christian? TCLEM Newsletter for Week of May 16th
My Fellow Sheepdogs:
I've hammered out this week’s newsletter from home as I recover from hip surgery (the result of bad genetics, duty-related injuries, and thirty years as competitive strength sports). While in lots of pain and discomfort, I’m striving to use this down period to spend more quality time with the Lord (working on THE relationship) and seeking His direction for this and other ministries I’m involved in. In fact a brother gave a timely reminder this week about what The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry is all about: spreading God’s word to the law enforcement “family” all over the world. Yes, we meet weekly for small-group/profession-relevant Bible study here in the Denver (CO) metro area but God has not called me to minister only here but world-wide. As such, we encourage the development of similar fellowships wherever you may be reading this (See the http://www.fcpo.org/ website and the links in our site for such groups in your area, or if none, prayerfully consider starting one of your own). I also strive to make this website and the weekly newsletters relevant to law enforcement personnel everywhere. Please hold me accountable to that and know that I covet your prayers and suggestions.
That said, one of the issues that God seems to be impressing on me during my “down” time is what it really means to be His follower -- what it means to be a TRUE Christian. The Bible – God’s inerrant and complete word – is in fact very clear on the subject: there is NO other kind (you are either IN or OUT)! God tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 that “… by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Does this mean that “works” are not important? On the contrary, James 2:14-26 (see http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+2%3A14-26&version=NIV and related passages) clearly tells us that works and faith go hand-in-hand. In short, just answering an alter call, repeating some words, or going through a ritual does not save us. Rather, what is the EVIDENCE (we should be all about the evidence) of your salvation? What I’m asking you to do here is to examine yourself. Are in fact a walking, talking example of what it means to be “sold-out” for Christ or are you a ROD (“retired on duty”) Christian? I strongly encourage you to view the following on the subject and, if lacking, that you get “right” with God today:

Jimmy will be teaching a thoroughly biblical and profession-relevant message he entitled Aspects of a Christian Leader. Warriors Praying for our Nation: TCLEM Newsletter for the week of May 9th

-- Thursday, May 20, 2010 -- same time/place as noted above. Noted outlaw motorcycle gang (OMG) expert and veteran officer Jim Wattles (of History Channel’s Gangland fame) will be our guest speaker. Stay tuned for next week's newsletter for details!

MESSAGE RECAP:
We had an outstanding time of fellowship, prayer and profession-relevant study of God’s word at last week’s TCLEM meeting. Inasmuch as last Thursday was the National Day of Prayer, the Holy Spirit led me to change my prepared message to one that centered on the subject intercessory prayer. My text came from both Daniel 9 and how it relates to the Lord’s appearance to Solomon in II Chronicles 6 and 7 (and 7:14 in particular). What we see in both passages are men who humbled themselves before the Lord on behalf of their people. God tells Solomon in verse 14 that “if My people, who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
In brief, God is saying that if we will do three things --
(1) be humble (confess)
(2) pray (repent)
(3) turn (come back) to Him.
In turn, He will respond in three ways --
(2) hear
(3) forgive
(4) heal.
Likewise, in the 9th chapter of Daniel, we see a humble, obedient and righteous believer praying for his people (country). The entire chapter is a testimony to the fact that God DOES answer prayer in accordance with His perfect timing and will. That said, what is significant about Daniel and his prayer for the nation? Here are the main points:
(1) Daniel’s prayer was the result of his study of Scripture (he referred to Leviticus 26:40-45 and other passages).
(2) Like Solomon, Daniel confessed and repented of his people’s sins (see Lamentations 1:18).
(3) Daniel fasted and prayed for a period of time (see Matthew 17:21, for example).
James (James 5:16) tells us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Daniel’s prayer was just that – the effective and fervent prayer of a righteous (in our case, being made right with God through a life-changing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ) man. In fact, II Chronicles 9:23-25 and 36:22-23 clearly reveal that God answered Daniel’s prayer on behalf of his people!
The application for us as Christian officers is straightforward:
(1) Be righteous before our Lord through a right-relationship with His Son.
(2) Pray fervently for our nation, our agencies, our leaders, and those we serve and protect.
Billy Graham’s Prayer for the Nation provides a great conclusion for this important message as it relates to us today:
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare... We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.. We have abused power and called it politics... We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free.. Amen!”
Are you prepared to pray for our country in the manner of Solomon and Daniel? As believers, God gives each of us the grace to be a modern day "Daniel" every day. Let’s get right and be in the fight -- and watch what God will do!
