"Good" Cop/"Bad" Cop

A Call to Serve

Late-Breaking Prayer Requests

** Please continue to pray for CSP Trooper Edward "Eddie" Taylor and the famlies (click on "Eddie qumi -- Eddie arise!"). Eddie's dad is also our pastor.
** Pray for my good friend and former partner in NM (DPS/SID) -- Todd G. -- who will have surgery on his neck tomorrow. As God to guide the surgeon's hand, wisdom for the medical team, and a rapid and full recovery for Todd.
** The following prayer request has been received from Queensland, Australia:
** An officer IL sends the following: "Last Thursday, members of the Chicago Ridge Police (IL) Department were dispatched to a Trash Recycling plant for what appeared to be a deceased male infant. Please pray for the officers who were involved. The Police Department has named the baby Jeremiah Michael and will be working with an organization "Resting in His Arms" who will assist the Police Department in ensuring a proper burial for Jeremiah. The medical examiner does not think they have anything to ID the mother. Baby was not full term but could have survived with medical attention.
** Pray for a chief's mom who is in the final stages of her fight with cancer. Pray for the family as well. Mark assures me that his mother knows Christ as Savior.
** Pray for those representing the various Christian law enforcement ministries being represented during National Police Week in D.C. -- that many seeds will be planted in our lost and hurting profession and that many will say "yes" to Christ.
** Pray for the many officers who do not know Christ as Savior and Lord will repent and believe, and that we will have a "Code 3" sense of urgency in sharing God's plan of salvation with our own in the mission field that is law enforcement.

Inspector David Stevenson (47 years) , died of a suspected heart attack at work last week. Please pray for Dave’s wife Carren and his two teenage children.

We just got home from Chattanooga, TN where we had our 2013 FCPO Spring Board Meeting where we spent the weekend planning and praying for FCPO's future, including but not limited to the 2013 conference. New Prayer Requests and Denver-Area Meeting News
I'll post the newsletter later this week (probably tomorrow) but wanted to start this week's prayer requests and local (Denver-area) meeting news whilst I had the chance. See previous posts for more...
PRAYER REQUESTS: UPDATED 5/13/2011
** From Larry Napp in MI:
UPDATE 05/15/2011: May has passed away and gone to be with the Lord -- please keep the family in your prayers.
One of our regular attenders Mary Roberts (wife to Mike Roberts, retired from Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety) was at our Bible Study last night with Mike and their daughter Tonya. Somtime after the Bible study Mary had a heart attack and was taken to Borgess Hospital and is in a coma. Would you please pray for Mary and her healing. Also, please pray for Mike, their daughter Tonya and the rest of their family during this difficult time.
** Englewood PD Ofc. Jason Pearson is organizing a relief trip to some of the more rural storm damaged areas in the South that are NOT getting much help. He writes,
I spoke again with Capt. Yates in Tulsa, OK today. He and his team just returned from Alabama Tuesday night, and he shared some thoughts with me to pass along. The cops they met in Alabama are in dire need. They have no cash, no clothes, no uniforms. They are in need of BOOTS, BODY ARMOR and any UNIFORMS they can get. If they were on duty when the tornadoes hit, that is what they have to wear, others are working patrol in jeans and t-shirts. Uniforms are also getting ruined as officers search through rubble and debris looking for missing people. They were still finding dead bodies Tuesday, and one town in Northern Alabama has lost over 10% of the town's entire population so far. While big areas like Tuscaloosa and Birmingham have Homeland Security, the Natl. Guard and FEMA on scene, the small towns don't even have stores that are open. Based on the long talk we had today, I plan on trying to get old boots, uniforms and leather gear donated, as well as diapers and baby formula. Rain gear and jackets are also needed. One Chief of Police that Capt. Yates encountered expressed fear that once FEMA and everyone else leaves, his staff still has to deal with the deaths, the devastation and the stress of trying to move forward with nothing, not even adequate work boots. I am going to begin collecting supplies and trying to round up cash to take and give to these families. Once the food banks and the shelters pack up and leave, these folks will still be homeless and in need for many weeks if not months before these towns can be rebuilt.
I appreciate any help you can give, and also appreciate those who have already volunteered to go with me.

** Former Mineral County (CO -- near Creede) Dep. Scott Warrington spent many months in rehab at Craig Hospital after sustaining a LOD head injury. Good news is that he was recently cleared to go back to work. Bad news is that the sheriff then terminated him for causing his agency an "undue hardship" by being injured and nearly dying while serving his community! Scott then found out he had been replaced soon after he was injured. Pray for Scott as he fights this injustice.
** Pray for MN officer Cody Gilliland, his wife Brenda, and their unborn child (CHILD!) -- they are experiencing complications with the pregnancy.
** Pray for an ICE agent colleague ("Lee") and his bride-to-be ("Michelle") who just got engaged.
** Pray for our own Matt Wallenburg who will be leaving for Air National Guard basic training in San Antonio in less than a month.
** Chief Rob Dahl in Oregon sends the following:
For my brother Prayer Warriors!
My brother was an Oregon Police Officer, who suffered a significant traumatic event on duty, five years ago. This led to the end of his bright law enforcement career, which he had been pursuing since he was an Explorer Scout, like many of us! He chose not to continue his quest, after the event, for the “sake of his family.”
Now, he is feeling a bit dead inside and truly missing all that this magnificent career / calling provides for us. He has been truly struggling with “life on the outside” and his desire to get back into a patrol car.
He is a great Christian man, with an amazing wife and children and much success ahead of him. Unfortunately, his internal battle is getting the best of him and last night he walked out on his wife and small children, to “find himself.”
This is far too common an event for folks in our profession. I have experienced it firsthand and want to do all I can to save him the pain that lies ahead for him and his family! I am begging that you pray for Josh by name, and ask that Our Lord give him strength to face his demons, and Faith and Courage to do the right thing for him, his wife, their children and his family!!! There is much at stake here!
Oddly enough, I saw the trailer for the new movie “Courageous” in the movie theatre last night! It truly speaks to this kind of pain and struggle that so many of us face. I hope that we as true Warriors of Faith can step up and help to serve those in our folds who are struggling. Right now, that is Josh and his family!
Let's step up (or kneel down) and pray!
** Be in prayer for all those heading to the Memorial in DC (Friday is the Candlelight Vigil) for National Police Week/National Peace Officers Memorial Day. Emily Dewey will be attending to see Chris's name inscribed on our Wall, as will others who lost loved ones this in 2010. We're up to 67 LOD so far this year...be vigilent and keep that sense of urgency about sharing Christ with others -- especially our fellow warriors.

Warriors Praying for our Nation: TCLEM Newsletter for the week of May 9th

Hope everyone took time out to spend time with (if close) and/or call our respective mothers on Mother’s Day. While I’m at it, “Love ya, Mom!”

MESSAGE RECAP:
We had an outstanding time of fellowship, prayer and profession-relevant study of God’s word at last week’s TCLEM meeting. Inasmuch as last Thursday was the National Day of Prayer, the Holy Spirit led me to change my prepared message to one that centered on the subject intercessory prayer. My text came from both Daniel 9 and how it relates to the Lord’s appearance to Solomon in II Chronicles 6 and 7 (and 7:14 in particular). What we see in both passages are men who humbled themselves before the Lord on behalf of their people. God tells Solomon in verse 14 that “if My people, who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
In brief, God is saying that if we will do three things --
(1) be humble (confess)
(2) pray (repent)
(3) turn (come back) to Him.
In turn, He will respond in three ways --
(2) hear
(3) forgive
(4) heal.
Likewise, in the 9th chapter of Daniel, we see a humble, obedient and righteous believer praying for his people (country). The entire chapter is a testimony to the fact that God DOES answer prayer in accordance with His perfect timing and will. That said, what is significant about Daniel and his prayer for the nation? Here are the main points:
(1) Daniel’s prayer was the result of his study of Scripture (he referred to Leviticus 26:40-45 and other passages).
(2) Like Solomon, Daniel confessed and repented of his people’s sins (see Lamentations 1:18).
(3) Daniel fasted and prayed for a period of time (see Matthew 17:21, for example).
James (James 5:16) tells us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Daniel’s prayer was just that – the effective and fervent prayer of a righteous (in our case, being made right with God through a life-changing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ) man. In fact, II Chronicles 9:23-25 and 36:22-23 clearly reveal that God answered Daniel’s prayer on behalf of his people!
The application for us as Christian officers is straightforward:
(1) Be righteous before our Lord through a right-relationship with His Son.
(2) Pray fervently for our nation, our agencies, our leaders, and those we serve and protect.
Billy Graham’s Prayer for the Nation provides a great conclusion for this important message as it relates to us today:
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare... We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.. We have abused power and called it politics... We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free.. Amen!”
Are you prepared to pray for our country in the manner of Solomon and Daniel? As believers, God gives each of us the grace to be a modern day "Daniel" every day. Let’s get right and be in the fight -- and watch what God will do!
MESSAGE PREVIEW:
Pastor Manny Hays (retired Denver PD officer and current DPD chaplain) will be teaching in my stead this week while I’m recovering from surgery. Manny’s topic centers around the challenging and oft misunderstood subject of predestination as detailed in Romans 8:18-39. Did we choose our calling or were we called to our calling? MESSAGE RECAP:
We had an outstanding time of fellowship, prayer and profession-relevant study of God’s word at last week’s TCLEM meeting. Inasmuch as last Thursday was the National Day of Prayer, the Holy Spirit led me to change my prepared message to one that centered on the subject intercessory prayer. My text came from both Daniel 9 and how it relates to the Lord’s appearance to Solomon in II Chronicles 6 and 7 (and 7:14 in particular). What we see in both passages are men who humbled themselves before the Lord on behalf of their people. God tells Solomon in verse 14 that “if My people, who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
In brief, God is saying that if we will do three things --
(1) be humble (confess)
(2) pray (repent)
(3) turn (come back) to Him.
In turn, He will respond in three ways --
(2) hear
(3) forgive
(4) heal.
Likewise, in the 9th chapter of Daniel, we see a humble, obedient and righteous believer praying for his people (country). The entire chapter is a testimony to the fact that God DOES answer prayer in accordance with His perfect timing and will. That said, what is significant about Daniel and his prayer for the nation? Here are the main points:
(1) Daniel’s prayer was the result of his study of Scripture (he referred to Leviticus 26:40-45 and other passages).
(2) Like Solomon, Daniel confessed and repented of his people’s sins (see Lamentations 1:18).
(3) Daniel fasted and prayed for a period of time (see Matthew 17:21, for example).
James (James 5:16) tells us that “the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Daniel’s prayer was just that – the effective and fervent prayer of a righteous (in our case, being made right with God through a life-changing, personal relationship with Jesus Christ) man. In fact, II Chronicles 9:23-25 and 36:22-23 clearly reveal that God answered Daniel’s prayer on behalf of his people!
The application for us as Christian officers is straightforward:
(1) Be righteous before our Lord through a right-relationship with His Son.
(2) Pray fervently for our nation, our agencies, our leaders, and those we serve and protect.
Billy Graham’s Prayer for the Nation provides a great conclusion for this important message as it relates to us today:
“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values.. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery.. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare... We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self-esteem.. We have abused power and called it politics... We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition.. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free.. Amen!”
Are you prepared to pray for our country in the manner of Solomon and Daniel? As believers, God gives each of us the grace to be a modern day "Daniel" every day. Let’s get right and be in the fight -- and watch what God will do!

National Day of Prayer & National Police Week Preview
Greetings Fellow Servant-Warriors:
First off (for our locals and visitors), we’re “on” for this week’s profession-relevant Bible study (see schedule below). Inasmuch as this Thursday is the National Day of Prayer (we’ll honour our Lord in prayer regardless of the flawed lower court ruling and related issues), I’ll be teaching a message that directly applies to us in law enforcement and we’ll have a special time of prayer for both our profession and our country. Invite a colleague and join us for a powerful evening of warrior-fellowship and the sharing of God’s word.

To recap last week’s study, our own Dep. Art Briles shared a message that contrasted portions of the Miranda advisal with our walk as Christian officers (especially as it relates to the “power of the tongue”). The scriptural context was derived primarily from Psalms and Proverbs. Take the time to study the following and see if you can discover how they relate to the Miranda rights:
(1) Keeping silent: Psalm 34:16-17; Psalm 56:8-13; Proverbs 2:1-9
(2) Anything you say can and will be used against you… (What you say and what comes out of your mouth can either bring life or death): Psalm 10:1-11; 12:3; 34:13; 37:30; Proverbs 10:31; 12:19; 18:21.

NATIONAL POLICE/National Law Enforcement Memorial WEEK Preview:
As most of you should be aware, National Police Week 2010 (http://www.nationalpoliceweek.com/) is set for May 9-15. I had hoped to be in DC for some of the events at the Memorial but it will have to wait another year as I’ll be spending much of that time in the hospital recovering from a long-overdue procedure to correct my decrepit hip caused by way too many years of “wrestling with God” (see Genesis 32:24-32) and a plethora of athletic and profession-related “abuse.”
Speaking of NPW: Law Enforcement United Team NM (6 riders) leaves for the long ride this Thurs. at 6:05 AM. The long ride (800 miles) will begin on Sat from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick Georgia and will end in Chesapeake VA on May 8th. The rest of the team (2 riders) will meet us on the 8th and we will all ride the remaining 250 miles to DC starting on the 10th to arrive on the 12th meeting Tonia Harris (see below) and Ally for the Law Enforcement Memorial Week events! PRAYER REQUESTS:
(1) Praise Report! Little Tayler Ellison (5 y.o. daughter of Englewood PD Officer Shane Ellison) had a very clean MRI and continues to be cancer free! Keep the Ellison family in prayer as they are expecting a new addition in about 13 weeks.
(2) Officers Down: Let’s be in prayer for our Detroit PD colleagues who were wounded in the shooting yesterday morning (1 dead, 4 wounded) as well as the family of our brother who “gave all.” See http://connect.lawofficer.com/forum/topics/detroit-officer-killed-4.
It has been a vicious last few days for us in general. See http://www.odmp.org/ for the latest – pray for the families and colleagues of our fallen brethren.
(3) FBI agent John Wills asks that we be in prayer for his 4 y.o. granddaughter who is experiencing unexplained seizures and passed out the other day. Pray for healing and for the doctors who are treating her.
(4) Pray for me reference my upcoming surgery (May 12th).
(5) On the subject of poor leadership “at the top,” I’ve been in contact with friends of Tonia Harris, widow of Sandoval County S.O. Deputy Joe Harris who was killed in the LOD last year. The following is just one example of poor leadership in that hurting agency. Please keep Tonia and the men/women of the SCSO in your prayers and for a repentant change to godly servant-leadership from Sheriff Trujillo. http://www.koat.com/news/23130579/detail.html.
My many contacts there tell me that this is just the “tip of the iceberg” when it comes to issues with that agency. Appalling. I've posted a photo of Joe at that National Police Memorial in DC on our website.
(6) Please be in prayer for our colleagues in Arizona as they deal with the fallout of that state’s righteous decision to begin enforcing the immigration laws already on the books at the federal level. Pray also for the full recovery of Pinal County S.O. Deputy Louie Puroll who was reportedly shot by illegal aliens during a traffic contact last Friday.
(7) Finally, please be in prayer for a colleague in NM who recently suffered a minor heart attack. Our brother covets our prayers as he makes some much-needed lifestyle changes.
