This week's Bible study is a "call to action" from God Himself. He is asking Christians and Christian officers, "Who will go for us" ("us" being the Triune God -- Father, Son, Holy Spirit). Even in these trying times for us in law enforcement, our answer should be a resounding, "Send me!"

"Eating our Young" -- Leadership in the Law Enforcement Profession
With Thanksgiving just a few days away, let me say in advance how thankful I am to be able to serve both the citizenry and my fellow LEOs as well. That said, the "What's for dinner?" response should not include our own. Huh? Check out the newsletter and devotioanal that deals with that subject: "Eating our Own -- Leadership in the Law Enforcement Profession". So what kind of leader are you?
As previously reported, we are NOT meeting this Thursday because it is in fact Thanksgiving. However, we ARE meeting at my place in Highlands Ranch next week. Stay tuned for the whole updated Colorado meeting schedule in a subsequent post and let's be watching each other's "six" out there while being bold in our service to the public, to each other, and to our Lord, Savior and true Captain!

As Iron Sharpens Iron -- A Lesson in Accountability
Fellow Paladins:
So how goes the “battle” (biblically speaking of course – see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL7cL_p5_84)? Rest assured, the battle we face in law enforcement goes hand-in-hand with the spiritual warfare we are engaged in daily. That said, part of girding (preparing for combat) ourselves for the battle should be regular fellowship with other believers – both with fellow Christian officers and as part of your local fellowship – aka “church.” Last week’s study centered around that very topic and the issue of biblical accountability. Here’s the recap:
Our foundational text was Proverbs 27:17 -- As iron sharpens iron, so one man (or woman) sharpens another. God’s infallible and inerrant word, the Bible, calls us to be accountable both to Him and to one another (fellow believers – aka those who have turned from their sin and trusted Christ as Lord and Savior – the definition of a “Christian”). Moreover, the concept should not be lost on any of us who have been through a military boot camp and/or a police academy. The issue is also central to what we do as a ministry and fellowship. One of the major reasons we should be meeting regularly with fellow Christian law enforcement personnel is so that we can be lovingly accountable to one another. Of course, accountability involves both the willingness to be held accountable and trusting those we are accountable to.
Finally, let’s not forget that we are ultimately accountable to God above all else: Hebrews 4:12-13 (NLT) says, For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before His eyes, and He is the one to whom we are accountable; Romans 14:12 says, So then each of you shall give an account of himself to God. Of course, knowing that we must one day answer to a just God should be a powerful incentive for holiness and obedience -- For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each may one day receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad (2 Cor. 5:10).

A Lesson in Leadership
Dear Fellow Sheepdogs & Shepherds:
I’ve recovered sufficiently from my surgery to be back teaching at this week’s Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry fellowship meeting where I will be presenting a message on how we should be looking at the trials and tribulations that are ESSENTIAL aspects of a Christian's life and “training.” Essential? Many will no doubt read this and say “What!?” Yes – they are absolutely essential. Join us and learn what God has to say on very profession (and life)-relevant subject.
As usual, I will present a recap in next week’s newsletter (also posted on our website) for all our readers who reside outside the Denver metro area or could not make the meeting. That said, if you are in fact a “local” or are visiting Colorado, please make every effort to join us tomorrow starting at 1900 hours at Calvary South Denver in Littleton to participate in this important profession-relevant presentation. Lastly, don’t forget to pass this email on to your colleagues and friends.
Speaking of message RECAPs, Colorado State Investigator Jim Wattles presented a superb lesson in Christian leadership as it applies to the law enforcement profession at last week's meeting. Jimmy’s introduction to the topic focused on an example of failed leadership in the person of Saul as detailed in 1 Samuel 10-15. Jim summed up God’s lesson for us in these passages as follows:
(1) Saul was successful when he sought, honored and obeyed God. Unfortunately, Saul strayed from the path God set for him.
(2) Continued disobedience left Saul unable to use the “spirit of the Lord” and he misused the power God gave him, resulting in his being removed from authority and ultimately his death.
(3) Through Saul’s example, God is telling us that we can either elect (yes, we have a choice) to do things our own way -- with Saul-like consequences -- or to seek His perfect plan for our lives through prayer, the study of His word (the Bible) and obedience to same.
Jim then laid out the biblical aspects of a true Christian leader:
(1) A Christian leader must have a true and faithful relationship with the Lord (Romans 8:28
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.).
(2) True leaders must think of themselves as servants (John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.).
(3) Speaking of shepherds: 1 Peter 5:1-3 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed. Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
(4) A leader shows others the way (1 Corinthians 11:1 Imitate me, just as I also imitate Christ).
(5) A leader will strengthen the group with compassion, patience and encouragement (Ezekiel 34:16 I will seek what was lost and bring back what was driven away, bind up the broken and strengthen what was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the strong, and feed them in judgment.).
(6) A leader must give fair discipline (Proverbs 3:12 For whom the Lord loves He corrects).
(7) A leader must give the group authority to succeed and accomplish their common goals (Thessalonians 5:14-15 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.).
(8) Those who fail to lead will have nobody following them (Matthew 15:14 Let them alone. They are blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind leads the blind, both will fall into a ditch.).
(9) A leader is prepared to forgive and move on (Colossians 3:13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Christ forgave you, so you also must do.).
(10) A leader must be have his confidence in Christ (Hebrews 13: 5-6 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you. So we may boldly say, the LORD is my helper, I will not fear. What can man do to me?).
Take note: a great deal of the misery so common to our profession stems from poor leadership! "Outstanding job Jim…much appreciated. "
Speaking of VISITORS, and lessons in LEADERSHIP, I’m excited to announce that former Marine (really no such thing as a former Marine), police officer and current chaplain Col. Ray Fairman (see http://www.rayfairman.com/ ) from Georgia will be coming through Colorado on vacation and will join us at our June 3rd meeting. I’ll save plenty of time for Ray to share some of testimony with us. Stay tuned for next week’s newsletter for more!

PRAYER REQUESTS (Pray unceasingly -- 1 Thessalonians 5:17)!
(1) Englewood PD Officer Jason Pearson asks that we be in pray for our brother and sister officers in Detroit. As many are aware, Detroit’s PD is in the midst of a tragic mess and there are some evil folks attempting to use the situation there to stir up considerable trouble and unrest. Both DPD and the community they serve need prayer and support. See www.policeone.com/legal/articles/2065952-Family-of-girl-who-died-in-in-raid-sues-Detroit-PD/.
(2) Thanks again for all who have been praying for me regarding my recent surgery. Praise God, I’m healing well although still a bit weak and tired. Please keep me in prayer for a quick and complete recovery. I go back to work next Tuesday.
(3) We’ve had another rough week in terms of line-of-duty “officer down” issues: another six in the last week alone. Please go to http://www.odmp.org/ and take time out to pray for the families and colleagues of these fallen heroes who “gave all.” Secondly, we need to have a sense of urgency about sharing the Gospel message with our brothers/sisters-in-arms. We must all come to Christ the same way folks!
(4) Finally, with Memorial Day weekend upon us, let’s take extra care out there – including praying before your shifts, giving thanks after, and remembering to pray for our country, our military, fellow officers and leadership.
While I know many us will be working extra hours, please MAKE time to worship with your family in a solid Bible-teaching church (fellowship is NOT optional – it is a command from our Lord) this weekend. Let’s also not forget to thank our Vets and fly our colors as well.

Are you a TRUE Christian? TCLEM Newsletter for Week of May 16th
My Fellow Sheepdogs:
I've hammered out this week’s newsletter from home as I recover from hip surgery (the result of bad genetics, duty-related injuries, and thirty years as competitive strength sports). While in lots of pain and discomfort, I’m striving to use this down period to spend more quality time with the Lord (working on THE relationship) and seeking His direction for this and other ministries I’m involved in. In fact a brother gave a timely reminder this week about what The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry is all about: spreading God’s word to the law enforcement “family” all over the world. Yes, we meet weekly for small-group/profession-relevant Bible study here in the Denver (CO) metro area but God has not called me to minister only here but world-wide. As such, we encourage the development of similar fellowships wherever you may be reading this (See the http://www.fcpo.org/ website and the links in our site for such groups in your area, or if none, prayerfully consider starting one of your own). I also strive to make this website and the weekly newsletters relevant to law enforcement personnel everywhere. Please hold me accountable to that and know that I covet your prayers and suggestions.
That said, one of the issues that God seems to be impressing on me during my “down” time is what it really means to be His follower -- what it means to be a TRUE Christian. The Bible – God’s inerrant and complete word – is in fact very clear on the subject: there is NO other kind (you are either IN or OUT)! God tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 that “… by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Does this mean that “works” are not important? On the contrary, James 2:14-26 (see http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+2%3A14-26&version=NIV and related passages) clearly tells us that works and faith go hand-in-hand. In short, just answering an alter call, repeating some words, or going through a ritual does not save us. Rather, what is the EVIDENCE (we should be all about the evidence) of your salvation? I've hammered out this week’s newsletter from home as I recover from hip surgery (the result of bad genetics, duty-related injuries, and thirty years as competitive strength sports). While in lots of pain and discomfort, I’m striving to use this down period to spend more quality time with the Lord (working on THE relationship) and seeking His direction for this and other ministries I’m involved in. In fact a brother gave a timely reminder this week about what The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry is all about: spreading God’s word to the law enforcement “family” all over the world. Yes, we meet weekly for small-group/profession-relevant Bible study here in the Denver (CO) metro area but God has not called me to minister only here but world-wide. As such, we encourage the development of similar fellowships wherever you may be reading this (See the http://www.fcpo.org/ website and the links in our site for such groups in your area, or if none, prayerfully consider starting one of your own). I also strive to make this website and the weekly newsletters relevant to law enforcement personnel everywhere. Please hold me accountable to that and know that I covet your prayers and suggestions.
That said, one of the issues that God seems to be impressing on me during my “down” time is what it really means to be His follower -- what it means to be a TRUE Christian. The Bible – God’s inerrant and complete word – is in fact very clear on the subject: there is NO other kind (you are either IN or OUT)! God tells us in Ephesians 2:8-9 that “… by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.”
Does this mean that “works” are not important? On the contrary, James 2:14-26 (see http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=James+2%3A14-26&version=NIV and related passages) clearly tells us that works and faith go hand-in-hand. In short, just answering an alter call, repeating some words, or going through a ritual does not save us. Rather, what is the EVIDENCE (we should be all about the evidence) of your salvation? Staying the Course and Finishing Strong
Greetings Fellow Warriors!
Right off (for my locals and visitors), don’t forget that there is NO MEETING tomorrow (Thursday, 031810). We’ll be back next week and don’t forget that I’ll have a special Easter message at our pre-Easter meeting on April 1st (no kidding). Check the schedule posted last week and next week’s newsletter for more -- and remember that our own Matt Wallenburg is back to open our meetings with some outstanding worship music (vital).
Speaking of meetings, we had a excellent turnout last Thursday as we explored the leadership style of Barnabas as detailed in Acts (4:36-37; 9:27; 11:24) and elsewhere in the New Testament. Tradition says that Barnabas was one of the seventy whom Jesus sent out in pairs "as lambs among wolves" into every city (Luke 10:1-24). That same passage reveals that the concept of delegation in leadership is passed down to us from our Lord Jesus Christ, who the tells us in verse 19, “Behold, I give you AUTHORITY to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall be any means hurt you.” (Note: “serpents and scorpions” is figurative for demonic powers – see Romans 16:20).
In truth, one of the greatest issues we deal with today in terms of those in positions of authority is a lack of leadership in the area of delegation. Those with the inability to delegate tend to be the insecure micromanagers that are the bane of all in our profession. By contrast, in Barnabas we have an example of a leader secure enough in his own capabilities and in his relationship with the Lord to encourage and empower others to act in his name. In fact, Barnabas’s name is literally translated “Son of Encouragement.”
So what kind of leader do you want? What kind of leader are you? Encourager/delegator or micromanager? Col. Ray Fairman writes, “The Lord sent seventy laborers out and told them they were as sheep among wolves, but most importantly he delegated an authority in Luke 10 verse 19 commensurate with the responsibility He placed upon them. Will He do any less for you? I think not. Therefore, can you do any less for those whom you lead? Again I think not!”

Tulsa PD Captain Travis Yates of 10-4 Ministries (http://www.tenfourministries.org/) has put together a short “must see” video for all law enforcement officers. The video also serves as a great template for Christian officers to share their faith with their fellow warriors. Travis also speaks the TRUTH: that we in this profession must still come to Christ like anyone else in order to be saved. Our profession and service does NOT save us. ONLY a right relationship with the risen Savior can save us!

PRAYER REQUESTS:
(1) Pray for a Grand Junction PD officer suffering from some ongoing health issues. Pray also for a Western Slope colleague who is battling cancer.
(2) ANSWERED PRAYER/Praise Report(!): Las Vegas Metro PD Lt. Christopher Hoye has been nominated to become the next U.S. Marshal for Nevada. Pray that his confirmation goes smoothly. Chris is a committed Christian and outstanding servant-leader.
(3) Five year-old Tayler Ellison, daughter of Englewood PD Ofc. Shane Ellison, continues to improve and has completed her treatment for brain cancer (praise God). She has an MRI next Wednesday -- pray it comes back clear. This little girl displays a true warrior’s attitude and spirit. I’ll keep you posted.
(4) Pray for a Mountie (RCMP) who is facing some tough hurdles as he fights a false charge against him (justice, truth, etc.). Ask God to fight the battle for him and that justice will prevail.
(5) POLICE LAYOFFS: Pray for those of us all around the country facing pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs in this difficult economy. Pray especially for the Colorado Springs PD as they are in a “world of hurt” financially and may be laying off a bunch.
(6) Pray for a local officer threatened with dismissal from his agency by leadership that prefers RODs ("Retired on Duty" officers) to those willing to get into the fight and lead from the front.
(7) Pray for another officer who lost his full-time position and benefits. He needs discipline and guidance with his family's finances and God's help in getting on with another agency.
(8) Pray for me as I will be speaking and teaching at a conference this weekend.
Folks, let’s “Run to the Battle” (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jL7cL_p5_84) and lead – truly LEAD – from the front with Christ as our Captain (Joshua 5:13-15). Until next week…let's stay the course and finish strong!

Biblical Police Leadership: Are you a delegator or micro-manager?
RECAP from last week and PREVIEW of this week’s meeting:
We had a FULL house at last week’s meeting as we took a phrase from a popular movie and explored it biblically as it relates to those of serving both in law enforcement and as Christian men and women in general. In Gladiator, the fictitious character Maximus used the term “Strength and Honor” (Virtus et Honor in Latin) when addressing and encouraging his men before battle. The phrase was not a true Roman motto but rather represents an ideal. So how does Strength and Honor relate to us as Christians and as Christian warriors in particular?
Dr. Greg Bourgond (www.heartofawarrior.org) wrote an excellent short article on the subject that served as a template for our study. While Greg supplied a superb list of relevant scripture passages with his article, the text for our study centered around II Samuel 22:33-35 (God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places. He teaches my hands to make war, so that my arms can bend a bow of bronze) and Psalm 144:1 (Blessed be the Lord my Rock, who trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle).
So what is the meaning for all of us in this? Both passages are more about the fact that, for the true Christian, it is God who fights the battle for us. Throughout scripture, God’s people always found themselves in a mess when they tried to do things their way instead of God’s way. God repeatedly defeated Israel’s enemies for them so long as they trusted Him and were obedient to his laws and commands. In fact, these passages are less about actual physical combat than they about trusting God to empower us to “run to the battle” under His leadership in all aspects of our lives.
In addition, the Strength and Honor concept has great meaning for us in terms of moving us to not be “retired on duty” (ROD) when it comes to our faith. On this topic Greg writes,
"I am sick and tired of mediocre Christianity that never has truly believed and never has truly received. You would think I would be encouraged about the continual reports we hear of many people coming to a saving knowledge of Christ. If so many are coming to the Lord why aren't we having a greater impact on our culture? If you and I lived our lives with the same furiosity, intentionality, focus, and purpose as this pagan Roman general but for the cause of Christ what could we accomplish for the kingdom?"
Bottom line here is the biblical concept of Strength and Honor is central to our calling as God’s servant-warriors both on the job and at home. What about you? Are you a ROD spiritually? (3) Emily Dewey has posted an update on her husband’s status (wounded Deputy Chris Dewey of Mahnomen County, MN). Please keep them in prayer during this difficult transition period. See http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/chrisdewey.
(4) A colleague in Grand Junction writes, “Please pray for Lane Jochums who has fallen gravely ill while serving in Iraq and has been airlifted to Germany for treatment.” Lane is a former Fruita (CO) PD officer.
(5) Pray for an officer from here in the Denver area who can’t work until he undergoes hip surgery. This brother has no insurance and is in constant pain. Cost for the surgery is $71,000!
(6) Continue to pray for a Western Slope colleague who is battling a plethora of cancer-related issues. She is a “trooper” but needs our prayers and support.
(7) Pray for a local officer who is on the verge of losing his job due in part to a lack of true servant-leadership in his agency.
(8) Continue to pray (salvation, healing, etc.) for the girlfriend of a Los Angeles PD officer. She was severely burned in an accident and is currently in an induced coma.
(9) Finally, pray for me as I prepare to speak at an upcoming retreat/conference at Glen Eyrie in Colorado Springs later this month.

(4) A colleague in Grand Junction writes, “Please pray for Lane Jochums who has fallen gravely ill while serving in Iraq and has been airlifted to Germany for treatment.” Lane is a former Fruita (CO) PD officer.
(5) Pray for an officer from here in the Denver area who can’t work until he undergoes hip surgery. This brother has no insurance and is in constant pain. Cost for the surgery is $71,000!
(6) Continue to pray for a Western Slope colleague who is battling a plethora of cancer-related issues. She is a “trooper” but needs our prayers and support.
(7) Pray for a local officer who is on the verge of losing his job due in part to a lack of true servant-leadership in his agency.
(8) Continue to pray (salvation, healing, etc.) for the girlfriend of a Los Angeles PD officer. She was severely burned in an accident and is currently in an induced coma.
(9) Finally, pray for me as I prepare to speak at an upcoming retreat/conference at Glen Eyrie in Colorado Springs later this month.

Credibility in Leadership!

This week we’ll complete part 2 of our look at the importance and power of credibility as it applies to biblical law enforcement leadership. To recap our study from last week, we took a look at the prophet Samuel as detailed in 1 Samuel 3-4. So what is the leadership lesson here? The historical setting presents Samuel as a teen (Ch. 3) – perhaps as young as twelve – already serving under Eli, a temple priest and one of the last Judges of Isreal. Eli provides us with an an example of a leader who fails to lead in a host of ways: Eli failed to even tell Samuel much, if anything, about the Lord despite his "religious" position; Eli showed poor judgement in his failure to lead, serve and discipline his other children – with corresponding tragic results for his family and others. In contrast, we see a godly woman in Samuel's mother and then Samuel responding to God’s call. The passage paints a picture of how love, obedience and devotion to our Lord leads to blessing and relationship (positive consequence) as opposed to the negative but thoroughly just consequences of sin (disobedience). So what kind of leader are you? Are you in “dialogue” (prayer, Bible study, etc.) with God? Are you truly leading your family and those in your charge? Are you leading/serving by example in your agency (regardless of rank)? Are you spending time in prayer, Bible study and worship? Do you have the true peace and joy that comes with a vibrant relationship with Christ? Or are you an “Eli” suffering the inevitable and well-deserved consequences of not doing the “right thing?” Rest assured, God both rewards AND lovingly disciplines His own. Much to think (and pray) about!
This Thursday we’ll conclude this chapter by exploring Col. Fairman’s "four areas of accountability:" SHEPARDING, STEWARDSHIP, VISION, and SERVANTHOOD. Ray writes, “Any leader who reaches a point in their life where their input is sought after must realize that they have also arrived at a pinnacle of immense responsibility. This advent ought to require them to review their values, motivations and actions in light of at least four critical leadership responsibilities.”

Follow-up to our APOLOGETICS Lesson:
Last week I answered a couple of questions I’ve received as it relates to cults and/or what some might call “quasi-Christian” belief systems. It is important to point out that all of us need to be “armed” with solid information and then proceed in humility, love, and concern for our brother/sister officers and others who are lost in false teaching. Again, God’s Word (not mine – HIS) is clear: Christ is THE way – the ONLY way -- to God and salvation. Jesus says in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. NO ONE comes to the Father except through me." Acts 4:12 says, “Salvation is found in NO ONE else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
So who exactly is this Jesus who saves us? The most important issue here is that Jesus has to be God (not “a god” as some falsely teach) because, if He is not God, our Lord's death on the cross would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty – death -- for our sins (1 John 2:2). A created being, which Jesus would be if He were not God, could not pay the infinite penalty required for sin against an infinite God. ONLY God can take on the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21), die, and be resurrected, proving His victory over sin and death. Again, Jesus is in fact God (God made flesh in the human side of Jesus on this earth) -- and NOT "a god" or a simple human prophet, as false teachers will claim. Whilst on the subject, why should we rely on God’s breathed, innerant ("without error") Word, the Bible? While the complete answer is voluminous in nature, check this out for starters: The following probabilities are taken from Peter Stoner in Science Speaks (Moody Press, 1963) to show that coincidence is ruled out by the science of probability. Stoner says that by using the modern science of statistical probability in reference to eight fulfilled prophecies alone, we find that “the chance that any man might have lived down to the present time and fulfilled all eight is 1 in 10 to the 17th power." That would be 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. In order to help us comprehend this staggering probability, Stoner illustrates it by supposing "we take 1017 silver dollars and lay them on the face of Texas. They will cover all of the state two feet deep. Now mark one of these silver dollars and stir the whole mass thoroughly, all over the state. Blindfold a man and tell him that he can travel as far as he wishes, but he must pick up one silver dollar and say that this is the right one. What chance would he have of getting the right one? Just the same chance that the prophets would have had of writing these eight prophecies and having them all come true in any one man." Stoner then considers 48 prophecies and says, "We find the chance that any one man fulfilled all 48 prophecies to be 1 in 10 to the 157th power, or 1 in 10,00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000, 000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,

Science tells us that the estimated number of electrons in the universe is around 10 to the 79th power. Moreover, biblical scholars provide solid evidence that Jesus fulfilled not just 48 but more than 300 Old Testament prophesies. The math/statistics are simply staggering and make it mathematically impossible for Jesus to fulfill all these prophesies by some sort of “accident.” In short, it is overwhelmingly clear that the Bible is absolutely true and trustworthy -- and Jesus is therefore exactly who He said He was: the only way (John 14:6).

(3) Continue to pray that the confirmation for a Nevada U.S. Marshal candidate – a strong believer and leader – goes through without any problems. It is the belief of many that there are those in positions of law enforcement leadership in Nevada who are neither godly nor true leaders who are actively trying to derail this process.
(4) Retired RCMP (“Mountie”) David Greenhalgh writes, “A Christian Border Officer with an exemplary record of hundreds of drug seizures and enforcement actions is being falsely accused of assault as a result of three alleged searches. In one case overwhelming evidence proves his innocence but a biased and incompetent investigation by another agency leaves two other allegations outstanding. This brother goes to trial in mid April. Please pray." This situation is sad and outrageous (again, a lack of true godly servant-leadership).
(5) Tim Longbrook writes, “A Boulder officer is currently in the advanced stages of lung cancer and has already had one lung removed (but seems to be holding his own right now). I hope to see him this Saturday. Also, a retired officer will be going into the hospital in Greeley on Monday for a heart checkup. He thinks it will be either a stint or a bypass. Both of these officers are born again Christians and very strong in the faith. Please pray for them.”
Let’s be on our knees for each other while leading boldly from the front in Christ!

A Leadership "Briefing"
Brothers & Sisters:
It has been an interesting week for many of us who have been called to serve in our God-ordained profession. That said, one of the main issues I deal with both as an officer and as a police chaplain continues to be the subject of leadership and the lack of true servant-leaders in our profession. Accordingly, we’ve begun our second major series on the subject of leadership as it applies law enforcement and the military (based loosely on Col. Ray Fairman’s work, Are you Destined to Lead? A Biblical Examination of Leadership). What makes this new series unique is that I’ll be able to share a significant portion of each discussion with everyone who receives our newsletters or checks our website. Starting today, I'll include a web link to each chapter as posted on Col. Ray Fairman’s website, www.rayfairman.com. The Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers (FCPO -- www.FCPO.org) and Mike's website both list study locations around the country and, if none can be found in your area, we strongly encourage you to prayerfully consider starting one of your own. The FCPO and I have the resources and personnel to help you establish your own chapter. Bottom line: pray, act, and LEAD!

(1) PRAISE REPORT! I've received news that a strong Christian law enforcement leader for whom we've been praying has been nominated to be the new US Marshal for Nevada. Let's continue to pray that our country's elected leadership (hmm) will turn to Christ and lead biblically.
(2) Pray for a brother officer whose wife has left him (strength, reconciliation, comfort, peace, etc.).
(3) I attended the farewell party for Mahnomen County (MN) Deputy Chris Dewey last week (bagpipers were awesome) but have just learned that Chris will need yet another surgery. Please pray for Chris and that Emily will stay strong as she stands by her warrior-husband. Emily writes, "Based on the most recent CT scan, as well as consulting with two other neurosurgeons, Chris needs to have another shunt placed. A CSF-filled cyst independent of his ventricles developed. This may be putting pressure on the deeper structures of his brain, and could be why he hasn’t spoken since his crinkliesty. He was also moving his right side a bit prior to surgery, and has since been unable to. We need continued prayers that he has a successful surgery, quick and infection-free recovery, and that this resolves his communication problems. Although there are no guarantees, I am cautiously optimistic that there will be some positive results from this. I’m really trying not to get my hopes up, but if it be His will, improvements will occur. "
(4) PRAISE REPORT! I've received news from Lebanon (NH) Police Chief Jim Alexander that his son Nick has made the US Winter Olympic Team as a ski jumper. How cool is that!
(5) Pray for the Grant Wolf's wife Ruth (illness).
(6) Pray for two brother officers who are struggling with alcoholism and related sin issues: one has already lost his job because of this issue and the other is getting precariously close.
(7) Pray for the mother of a fellow officer (surgery).
(8) Finally, please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and all the police officers and military personnel serving there in the midst of mind-numbing tragedy. God can and will use this for His glory (see also http://www.gotquestions.org/natural-disasters.html). While your at it, please pray for one of our "regulars," Lupe Pruneda (ICE), who will be assisting in the relief effort for the the next month or so.

(1) PRAISE REPORT! I've received news that a strong Christian law enforcement leader for whom we've been praying has been nominated to be the new US Marshal for Nevada. Let's continue to pray that our country's elected leadership (hmm) will turn to Christ and lead biblically.
(2) Pray for a brother officer whose wife has left him (strength, reconciliation, comfort, peace, etc.).
(3) I attended the farewell party for Mahnomen County (MN) Deputy Chris Dewey last week (bagpipers were awesome) but have just learned that Chris will need yet another surgery. Please pray for Chris and that Emily will stay strong as she stands by her warrior-husband. Emily writes, "Based on the most recent CT scan, as well as consulting with two other neurosurgeons, Chris needs to have another shunt placed. A CSF-filled cyst independent of his ventricles developed. This may be putting pressure on the deeper structures of his brain, and could be why he hasn’t spoken since his crinkliesty. He was also moving his right side a bit prior to surgery, and has since been unable to. We need continued prayers that he has a successful surgery, quick and infection-free recovery, and that this resolves his communication problems. Although there are no guarantees, I am cautiously optimistic that there will be some positive results from this. I’m really trying not to get my hopes up, but if it be His will, improvements will occur. "
(4) PRAISE REPORT! I've received news from Lebanon (NH) Police Chief Jim Alexander that his son Nick has made the US Winter Olympic Team as a ski jumper. How cool is that!
(5) Pray for the Grant Wolf's wife Ruth (illness).
(6) Pray for two brother officers who are struggling with alcoholism and related sin issues: one has already lost his job because of this issue and the other is getting precariously close.
(7) Pray for the mother of a fellow officer (surgery).
(8) Finally, please continue to pray for the people of Haiti and all the police officers and military personnel serving there in the midst of mind-numbing tragedy. God can and will use this for His glory (see also http://www.gotquestions.org/natural-disasters.html). While your at it, please pray for one of our "regulars," Lupe Pruneda (ICE), who will be assisting in the relief effort for the the next month or so.

A Question of Leadership
Fellow Servant-Warriors:
Lots to put out this week so please bear with me and take the time to read it through.
First off, we’re ”on” for this week’s profession-relevant Bible study and fellowship meeting this Thursday (Jan. 21st) at Calvary South Denver in Littleton starting at 1900 hours in classroom #7. This week we will begin a new series on LEADERSHIP in the law enforcement profession based on Col. Ray Fairman’s “Leadership Lessons from God” (from his book, Are you Destined to Lead? A Bible Examination of Leadership). The series will challenge us to accept the call to leadership that God has placed on everyone who serves in law enforcement (regardless of rank). BIBLE STUDY RECAP:
Last week we concluded our discussion about what it means to be a “true Christian" by examining what happens after we die (and what happens after a cop goes down in the line of duty). The superb biblical website http://www.gotquestions.org/ provides a great short article on the subject:
Within the Christian faith, there is a significant amount of confusion regarding what happens after death. Some hold that after death, everyone “sleeps” until the final judgment, after which everyone will be sent to heaven or hell. Others believe that at the moment of death, people are instantly judged and sent to their eternal destinations. Still others claim that when people die, their souls/spirits are sent to a “temporary” heaven or hell, to await the final resurrection, the final judgment, and then the finality of their eternal destination. So, what exactly does the Bible say happens after death?First, for the believer in Jesus Christ, the Bible tells us that after death believers’ souls/spirits are taken to heaven, because their sins are forgiven by having received Christ as Savior (John 3:16, 18, 36). For believers, death is to be “away from the body and at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:6-8; Philippians 1:23). However, passages such as 1 Corinthians 15:50-54 and 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 describe believers being resurrected and given glorified bodies. If believers go to be with Christ immediately after death, what is the purpose of this resurrection? It seems that while the souls/spirits of believers go to be with Christ immediately after death, the physical body remains in the grave “sleeping.” At the resurrection of believers, the physical body is resurrected, glorified, and then reunited with the soul/spirit. This reunited and glorified body-soul-spirit will be the possession of believers for eternity in the new heavens and new earth (Revelation 21-22).Second, for those who do not receive Jesus Christ as Savior, death means everlasting punishment. However, similar to the destiny of believers, unbelievers also seem to be sent immediately to a temporary holding place, to await their final resurrection, judgment, and eternal destiny. Luke 16:22-23 describes a rich man being tormented immediately after death. Revelation 20:11-15 describes all the unbelieving dead being resurrected, judged at the great white throne, and then being cast into the lake of fire. Unbelievers, then, are not sent to hell (the lake of fire) immediately after death, but rather are in a temporary realm of judgment and condemnation. However, even though unbelievers are not instantly sent to the lake of fire, their immediate fate after death is not a pleasant one. The rich man cried out, “I am in agony in this fire” (Luke 16:24).Therefore, after death, a person resides in a “temporary” heaven or hell. After this temporary realm, at the final resurrection, a person’s eternal destiny will not change. The precise “location” of that eternal destiny is what changes. Believers will ultimately be granted entrance into the new heavens and new earth (Revelation 21:1). Unbelievers will ultimately be sent to the lake of fire (Revelation 20:11-15). These are the final, eternal destinations of all people—based entirely on whether or not they had trusted Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Matthew 25:46; John 3:36).
So what about a police officer? Folks, while the Bible clearly supports our calling in law enforcement (we are his ordained “ministers”), we do NOT get some kind of “get out of Hell free card” for our service. Like anyone else, we MUST trust Christ -- and Christ ALONE -- as Lord and Savior in order to enter eternal life with Him. Are you ready to say “YES” to Christ? Are you a believer or a “make-believer?”

Jimmy writes, “Ron "Bad Ron" Gruber was a former member of the Sons of Silence motorcycle gang in Iowa. He was a very violent member, along with his two brothers, Jeffrey Gruber, "Bad Ron," and Mark "Turd" Gruber. Ron is doing time in Iowa after taking a plea bargain to charges related to the murder of a young woman who was the girlfriend of another member of the Sons of Silence. Jeffrey Gruber is doing a life sentence at Florence FCI.”

OFFICER DOWN NEWS:
As of today (01/17/10), we are up to a dozen officers killed in the line of duty so far in January alone. One of those, Special US Deputy Marshal Stan Cooper (EOW 01/04/10), began his law enforcement career in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1960 before moving to Las Vegas were he retired as a sergeant. In 1994 Stan went to work at the LV Federal Court House where he was serving when, while defending others on January 4th, God called him home after 42 years of service. Regarding Stan, a colleague sent this article to me today in response to a previous question I asked about whether or not Stan knew Christ as his Savior. The article, in a VERY secular newspaper(!), not only answers that question with a resounding “YES” (praise God) but also says volumes about drawing close to God so we can be ready to be used by Him in “Esther” (Esther 4:14) moments. Chris is a true leader of men and a servant-leader in every respect… Please pray that the nomination goes forward without any problems.
(3) Ron Leonard of Christian Military Fellowship (http://www.cmfhq.org/) sent me the following regarding the situation in Haiti: “As all of you are now aware the tiny country of Haiti was hit by a 7.2 earth quake that has left the country in shambles. They are now est. more than 100,000 may be dead! I know many of you are already giving to the need there. But if you are still praying about how to give here are "Proven" organizations that are helping. http://www.samaritanspurse.org/ (Headed by Franklin Graham), and www.salvationarmyusa.org. These are two of the ones who have come to my attention that we know the money is getting directly to the Haitian people! Most of all my brothers and sisters, please pray!”
I second that in every way. Let’s be praying for our fellow officers and military personnel serving there as well as they are most definitely in “harm’s way.”

(5) Please pray for the wife of a JeffCO deputy who is battling cancer. Denise’s husband has only recently returned to work after recovering from line of duty injuries that nearly took his life last year.
(6) Fellow FCPO member Ray Bell asks that we be in prayer for his father-in-law who is battling cancer.

Moses -- A Lesson in Godly Leadership and the Power of Prayer
Greetings fellow “sheepdogs!”
I just got back from attending the CPPA Conference in Grand Junction where I gave the invocation (thanks to all who prayed for me) and attended Lt. Col. Dave Grossman’s acclaimed “Bulletproof Mind” seminar. Dave was outstanding as usual and I had the privilege of assisting him with his book sales during breaks. Col. Grossman is a MUST-SEE and, as he spends over 300 days a year on the road “ministering” to law enforcement and military personnel all over the world, he is very likely coming to location near you. Go to his website (http://www.killology.com/) and click on the calendar button! Dave, a devout Christian, now has one of our new Centurion LE Ministry t-shirts to wear! While I consider Col. Grossman to be a friend and brother-in-Christ, the fact is that this brother is a true friend to all of us in law enforcement. Dave's passion for his fellow warriors is nothing short of “ministry” even if those he is “preaching” to often have no idea that many of the principles he teaches are indeed biblical in nature. One of Dave’s favorite verses that he cites when signing books is Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Indeed, as my pastor likes to say, let’s “stay the course and finish strong!”
Secondly, I’ve posted (scroll down to the bottom of the page) some PHOTOS from the Densey Cole/Chris Dewey benefit. The first is of Chris and his wife Emily while the second shows Chris and Densey together. Please continue to keep these brothers (and their families) in prayer. I hope to visit them again and have some updates for next week's newsletter.

(1) Thanks to all who have been praying for a fellow State Criminal Investigator who just underwent triple-bypass surgery. He survived (praise God) and is currently in rehab. Continue to pray for full recovery.
(2) Pray for a local police chief and his spouse: both are dealing with potentially serious medical issues. Let's ask God for intervention and healing according to His will and plan.
(3) Pray for a colleague and friend facing unjust (in my view) disciplinary action at his agency. Ask God to touch the heart of his Chief who has a long history of failing to truly lead from a biblical world view (and thus partially responsible for the ongoing morale issues in his department).
(4) Federal LE Ranger Krysia Baron in NM sent the following prayer request: “Please pray for the daughter of USFS ASAC Robin Poague. Robin and his daughters (ages 7 and 4) were in a serious car wreck on Friday. Their station wagon was T-boned by a driver in an SUV who had run a stop sign at about 60 mph. His younger girl, who was on the side of impact, suffered a concussion and a skull fracture and has about 45 stitches--she will require cosmetic surgery in the future--but thankfully there is NO neurological damage (PRAISE GOD!). Robin has been counting his blessings and is very thankful for the outcome--he could have easily lost his daughter(s). He would appreciate prayers for a speedy recovery for Allie.”
(5) Phil Headden with Chattanooga PD sent the following reference his injured (U.S. Navy line-of-duty) son: “I just talked to Ryan in Bethesda MD. He has seen several doctors and all are certain he will not regain sight in his eye. He is totally blind in his left eye. Continue to pray for him as he is very upset. He will likely be discharged from the Navy with a disability pension. Losing an eye is a horrible thing, but I thank God that he is alive and will be able to function in society. These things happen for a reason. God is awesome and I am blessed to have family and friends who support us in every way. God will reveal his glory in this horrible accident…”

One of Dave’s favorite verses that he cites when signing books is Galatians 6:9, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” Indeed, as my pastor likes to say, let’s “stay the course and finish strong!”
Secondly, I’ve posted (scroll down to the bottom of the page) some PHOTOS from the Densey Cole/Chris Dewey benefit. The first is of Chris and his wife Emily while the second shows Chris and Densey together. Please continue to keep these brothers (and their families) in prayer. I hope to visit them again and have some updates for next week's newsletter.

PRAYER REQUESTS (Please take the time to truly lift these individuals in prayer. As always, forward your prayer requests to me for publication here as appropriate or to bring up during our weekly fellowship meetings.)
(1) Thanks to all who have been praying for a fellow State Criminal Investigator who just underwent triple-bypass surgery. He survived (praise God) and is currently in rehab. Continue to pray for full recovery.
(2) Pray for a local police chief and his spouse: both are dealing with potentially serious medical issues. Let's ask God for intervention and healing according to His will and plan.
(3) Pray for a colleague and friend facing unjust (in my view) disciplinary action at his agency. Ask God to touch the heart of his Chief who has a long history of failing to truly lead from a biblical world view (and thus partially responsible for the ongoing morale issues in his department).
(4) Federal LE Ranger Krysia Baron in NM sent the following prayer request: “Please pray for the daughter of USFS ASAC Robin Poague. Robin and his daughters (ages 7 and 4) were in a serious car wreck on Friday. Their station wagon was T-boned by a driver in an SUV who had run a stop sign at about 60 mph. His younger girl, who was on the side of impact, suffered a concussion and a skull fracture and has about 45 stitches--she will require cosmetic surgery in the future--but thankfully there is NO neurological damage (PRAISE GOD!). Robin has been counting his blessings and is very thankful for the outcome--he could have easily lost his daughter(s). He would appreciate prayers for a speedy recovery for Allie.”
(5) Phil Headden with Chattanooga PD sent the following reference his injured (U.S. Navy line-of-duty) son: “I just talked to Ryan in Bethesda MD. He has seen several doctors and all are certain he will not regain sight in his eye. He is totally blind in his left eye. Continue to pray for him as he is very upset. He will likely be discharged from the Navy with a disability pension. Losing an eye is a horrible thing, but I thank God that he is alive and will be able to function in society. These things happen for a reason. God is awesome and I am blessed to have family and friends who support us in every way. God will reveal his glory in this horrible accident…”

South Carolina Mayor Bans Police Foot Pursuits!!
Speaking of leadership vacuums, I was going to include this in the next newsletter but I just can't resist. For those who have not seen it, take a look at this bizarre situation in Wellford, SC (video in particular). Part leadership vacuum, part insane. The truth here is that a whole slew of good officers lose their careers on a regular basis due to this kind of "leadership." Guess the citizens of Wellford, like those of this country in general, got what they asked for. Sad day indeed. Please pray for our brothers with the Wellford PD.
