The following e-mail was forwarded to me from Scott Chamberlain, who is a LEO from Oregon. Officer Doug Asboe (Fairview PD) and his wife Tera (Boring FD) had a baby boy a few weeks ago, born with a serious medical issue. He remains hospitalized at Dornbecher and they have been by his side throughout, staying at the Ronald McDonald house a good portion of the time. Their son, Ryker, continues to struggle and is facing another significant surgery incoming days. We need to truly cover this family, baby Ryker, the doctors and nurses and everyone involved in significant prayer!!!

This could have been much, much worse. Suspect is still at-large -- pray he is taken into custody without further injury to officers.
-- Pray for Chicago PD Officer Marikay O'Brien who is once again dealing with a potential cancer issue. Marikay has also been reaching out to wounded CPD Ofc. Densey Cole.
-- Please keep Daniel and the rest of the Greenhalgh family in prayer. God knows the need.
-- Please pray for a new officer who is feeling lost spiritually as he starts out in our God-ordained yet exceedingly difficult profession.
-- Please pray for our country and our leaders, especially in regards to the upcoming election that is only only days away (many of us have already submitted our mail-in ballots or gone to early voting). I can't tell you whom to VOTE for, but our call is to vote biblically (biblical world-view). Let's also be II Chronicles 7:14 Christians both on our knees and at the polls. May God bless and keep and the United States of America and defend our fellow warriors fighting both abroad (military) and domestically (law enforcement).

More Prayer Requests (Updated)

-- Retired CPD Lt. Chuck Urgo -- a fellow FCPO national board member, sent the following: Chicago lost a fine officer yesterday. From all accounts he was not only a fine officer but a compassionate man who volunteered his time to help a blind neighbor. He was a husband, military veteran, athlete and had served the city for 11 years. Our prayers go out to his family, friends and fellow officers. I don't know where he stood with the Lord. My hope and prayer is that he had an active faith in Jesus. I would encourage every cop that has a relationship with the Lord to pray for your fellow officers, live a life worth of Christ and share your faith boldly. Be that "light in a dark place" pointing others to Jesus. You'll never know which of your co-workers may not make it to the next roll call.

-- As many of you know, former BART Officer Johannes Mehserle is currently on trial in CA. It is pretty clear to any trained officer that Johannes thought he was using a Taser and not a firearm. Please ask God to see that justice is done (this was NOT murder), that He will protect our brother/sister officers, and that cooler heads will prevail (reference the expected riots). -- A Chief writes, “On Saturday (07/03/10) morning Paul, the best man at my daughter’s wedding, was in a horrible traffic accident on his way to work. As a result of the accident he is paralyzed from the waist down, has a broken femur, shattered shoulder, 200 stitches in his face, broken ribs and a punctured lung. He had spinal surgery yesterday and has a second scheduled for next week. An off-duty cop and paramedic who were close and witnessed the accident saved his life. Please keep him in your prayers.”
-- Pray for a fellow investigator currently serving in Afghanistan with his Reserve unit (safety and that he will follow "hard after" our Lord).
-- Please pray for Illinois officer who is going through a proverbial “hell on earth” situation in relation to a use-of-force incident. Lots more to Jim’s situation than what is being played out in the media. We seek God’s intervention, truth, biblical leadership and of course that Jim would accept Christ as his Lord and Savior. Pray also for Jim’s sergeant (Dino) who is displaying outstanding courage and leadership in coming alongside our brother.
-- We continue to visit with Brownstown (MI) PD Officer Max Faistenhammer who is currently paralyzed and undergoing rehab here at Craig Hospital. Pray that our brother comes to Christ and that our Lord would grant Max healing in accordance with His perfect will. Whilst we’re at it, please continue to pray for Mahnomen County (MN) Dep. Chris Dewey and Chicago PD Ofc. Densey Cole.
-- Jason Pearson (Englewood PD) writes, "Mike Sorenson was re-admitted to Craig Hospital yesterday. Mike was shot in the line of duty some years ago and has returned due to complications from that shooting. Mike is in room #301, however he has limited visitation due to the seriousness of his new condition. Mike cannot talk out loud due to the recent complications that he suffered, but can lip words. Visits are limited to 5 minutes and please check in at the 3 West nurses station. Mike is from Wisconsin, I met him in February when he was at Craig for a re-evaluation. He is a great guy and does amazing things. " Let's keep Mike in prayer.
-- Pray for a young officer who is going through a divorce (restoration, repentance and biblical obedience, etc.). They have only been married a short time and his wife, supposedly a believer, left for other than biblical reasons (aka "sin").
-- Please keep the Chief and staff of the Grand Junction PD in your prayers (godly servant-leadership and more).
-- Pray for a colleague who is hurting and fighting for his marriage – part of which includes praying that his wife will come out of rebellion and back to the Lord. Our brother is also seeking God’s direction and will in terms of his career path and ministry.

Staying the Course and Finishing Strong
Greetings Fellow Warriors!
Right off (for my locals and visitors), don’t forget that there is NO MEETING tomorrow (Thursday, 031810). We’ll be back next week and don’t forget that I’ll have a special Easter message at our pre-Easter meeting on April 1st (no kidding). Check the schedule posted last week and next week’s newsletter for more -- and remember that our own Matt Wallenburg is back to open our meetings with some outstanding worship music (vital).
Speaking of meetings, we had a excellent turnout last Thursday as we explored the leadership style of Barnabas as detailed in Acts (4:36-37; 9:27; 11:24) and elsewhere in the New Testament. Tradition says that Barnabas was one of the seventy whom Jesus sent out in pairs "as lambs among wolves" into every city (Luke 10:1-24). That same passage reveals that the concept of delegation in leadership is passed down to us from our Lord Jesus Christ, who the tells us in verse 19, “Behold, I give you AUTHORITY to trample on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall be any means hurt you.” (Note: “serpents and scorpions” is figurative for demonic powers – see Romans 16:20).
In truth, one of the greatest issues we deal with today in terms of those in positions of authority is a lack of leadership in the area of delegation. Those with the inability to delegate tend to be the insecure micromanagers that are the bane of all in our profession. By contrast, in Barnabas we have an example of a leader secure enough in his own capabilities and in his relationship with the Lord to encourage and empower others to act in his name. In fact, Barnabas’s name is literally translated “Son of Encouragement.”
So what kind of leader do you want? What kind of leader are you? Encourager/delegator or micromanager? Col. Ray Fairman writes, “The Lord sent seventy laborers out and told them they were as sheep among wolves, but most importantly he delegated an authority in Luke 10 verse 19 commensurate with the responsibility He placed upon them. Will He do any less for you? I think not. Therefore, can you do any less for those whom you lead? Again I think not!”

The video also serves as a great template for Christian officers to share their faith with their fellow warriors. Travis also speaks the TRUTH: that we in this profession must still come to Christ like anyone else in order to be saved. Our profession and service does NOT save us. ONLY a right relationship with the risen Savior can save us!

PRAYER REQUESTS:
(1) Pray for a Grand Junction PD officer suffering from some ongoing health issues. Pray also for a Western Slope colleague who is battling cancer.
(2) ANSWERED PRAYER/Praise Report(!): Las Vegas Metro PD Lt. Christopher Hoye has been nominated to become the next U.S. Marshal for Nevada. Pray that his confirmation goes smoothly. Chris is a committed Christian and outstanding servant-leader.
(3) Five year-old Tayler Ellison, daughter of Englewood PD Ofc. Shane Ellison, continues to improve and has completed her treatment for brain cancer (praise God). She has an MRI next Wednesday -- pray it comes back clear. This little girl displays a true warrior’s attitude and spirit. I’ll keep you posted.
(4) Pray for a Mountie (RCMP) who is facing some tough hurdles as he fights a false charge against him (justice, truth, etc.). Ask God to fight the battle for him and that justice will prevail.
(5) POLICE LAYOFFS: Pray for those of us all around the country facing pay cuts, furloughs and layoffs in this difficult economy. Pray especially for the Colorado Springs PD as they are in a “world of hurt” financially and may be laying off a bunch.
(6) Pray for a local officer threatened with dismissal from his agency by leadership that prefers RODs ("Retired on Duty" officers) to those willing to get into the fight and lead from the front.
(7) Pray for another officer who lost his full-time position and benefits. He needs discipline and guidance with his family's finances and God's help in getting on with another agency.
(8) Pray for me as I will be speaking and teaching at a conference this weekend.

Remembering Chicago PD Sgt. Al Haymaker
UPDATED 2/25/10!
Fellow FCPO national board member Chuck Urgo (Chicago PD - retired) sent met his today reference the line-of-duty death of CPD Sgt. Al Haymaker. In addition to having a cool last name, this brother was absolutely SOLID in the Lord. As such, we can rest easy knowing that Al is with Him now. Al's example should be one that motivates other believers to share Christ with their colleagues. Let's be in prayer for Al's wife, daughters, family and colleagues. I will be volunteering with the CPD Peer Support team for both. The services will be from Al's church and are to be streamed to all our police districts. What a witnessing opportunity for his pastor! Former Partner: Haymaker Was "Good, Patient"
"He was patient with young officers and loved to teach."
Town Hall District police officers gathered this morning for a bunting ceremony for Sgt. Alan Haymaker, who died yesterday in an early morning crash on Lake Shore Drive while responding to a burglary. Though most officers declined comment, Haymaker's former partner took the opportunity to recall the deceased peace officer as a man who "had a great love for God, his family and friends."
"He was patient with young officers and loved to teach," said Officer Larry Young, a former partner in the 15th for five years, and who works in the 23rd now. "It's what he did all the time."
Young said that Haymaker was patient, conscientious with paperwork, and a man of deep faith. "At the scene of a shooting, he would comfort the family and tell them about God and how he would pull them through," said Young.
That Haymaker was religious shouldn't come as a surprise: he joined the police department in 1988, changing careers from being an associate pastor at a Northwest Side evangelical church. Haymaker had also attended Moody Bible Institute and Trinity Evangelical University.
Haymaker is the 13th officer killed in the district since March 5, 1910.
Haymaker was responding to a burglary in progress when his squad car left the road, hit a light pole and finally a tree. He was pinned in the car for some time.
The accident occurred at 5:06 am at the 4100 block of Lake Shore Drive. The burglary was reported at 3167 N. Clark, at the Consolidated Communications building. Police closed down all four southbound lanes to investigate the accident for a short time.
After the crash, Haymaker was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where was pronounced dead at 7:33 a.m. Haymaker comes from a long line of cops. His Grandfather, father and uncle all served on the force. Haymaker, who had been serving from the 23rd precint since December, is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Police said icy roads may have been a factor in the crash. The accident happened in the midst of a Winter Weather Advisory that warned of slick roads and poor visibility.

Young said that Haymaker was patient, conscientious with paperwork, and a man of deep faith. "At the scene of a shooting, he would comfort the family and tell them about God and how he would pull them through," said Young.
That Haymaker was religious shouldn't come as a surprise: he joined the police department in 1988, changing careers from being an associate pastor at a Northwest Side evangelical church. Haymaker had also attended Moody Bible Institute and Trinity Evangelical University.
Haymaker is the 13th officer killed in the district since March 5, 1910.
Haymaker was responding to a burglary in progress when his squad car left the road, hit a light pole and finally a tree. He was pinned in the car for some time.
The accident occurred at 5:06 am at the 4100 block of Lake Shore Drive. The burglary was reported at 3167 N. Clark, at the Consolidated Communications building. Police closed down all four southbound lanes to investigate the accident for a short time.
After the crash, Haymaker was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where was pronounced dead at 7:33 a.m. Haymaker comes from a long line of cops. His Grandfather, father and uncle all served on the force. Haymaker, who had been serving from the 23rd precint since December, is survived by his wife and three daughters.
Police said icy roads may have been a factor in the crash. The accident happened in the midst of a Winter Weather Advisory that warned of slick roads and poor visibility.
