God's Rescue Mission -- New Year Blessings!
On behalf of The Centurion Law Enforcement Ministry and the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers, Happy New Year! My prayer is that you will follow hard (Psalm 63:8) after our true Commander and Chief -- our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ -- in this New Year. Ask God to use you for His purpose. We may very well be in the "end times" and, as such, those of us who call ourselves "Christian" should have a sense of urgency about living and and sharing Christ with others. Moreover, those of us serving in the God-ordained profession of law enforcement who already know Christ as Lord and Savior need to understand that "Code 3" sense of urgency all the more inasmuch as perhaps only 1 in 10 of our colleagues having a saving faith in the ONLY One who can give it. Let's make 2013 a "new year" of living for Him in deeper ways while also sharing Christ's love and plan with others.
If you are reading this and have yet to make a decision for Him, let me urge you to do so now. I've posted a series links to some outstanding resources to help you do just that -- look left and scroll down to the links under Know God? True "Officer Safety." If you have already made that decision in your own life but have fallen away from your "first love," then turn AWAY from your sin and back to Him today. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33 (NLT), Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.
In over a quarter-century of service, God has often placed me in the right place at the right time to save lives -- to "rescue" others (no offense to our firefighting brethren, but cops are almost always at the scene first...LOL). That said, our Lord -- the greatest "cop" of all time -- is the true "rescuer." God sent His only Son to come to this earth for one purpose -- to "rescue" us from our sin by dying in our place on a cross and then rising again in three days. That's THE rescue mission -- and the subject of this past week's law enforcement newsletter and Bible study: God's Rescue Mission. As always, we encourage you to adapt our studies to your own faith walk and then pass it on to others. Lots of news (including the "411" about this week's meeting and study), announcements and resources as well -- enjoy.

Cops United in Combat: TCLEM Newsletter

Right off, this week’s tactical, profession-relevant Bible study will be a follow-up to last week’s teaching on Why God Allows Evil? (see RECAP below). Specifically, I’ll share an in-depth study based on Dep. Mike Dye’s (author of The PeaceKeepers -- see http://www.christianlawenforcement.com/index.html) June 2nd devotional in Grant Wolf's Stories of Faith and Courage from Cops on the Street. The study presents a viable avenue for us as Christians and law enforcement officers to combat evil and make a real difference in our communities through the power of prayer. I’ve entitled it Cops United in Combat and I’ll have a full recap for you in next week’s newsletter – stay tuned!

MESSAGE RECAP: Why God Allows Evil and Tragedy?
Our friends at GotQuestions.org provide a great biblical answer at http://www.gotquestions.org/God-allow-evil.html. That answer goes hand-in-hand with this question: Why does God allow bad things to happen to good people? The biblical answer can be found at http://www.gotquestions.org/bad-things-good-people.html.
Evangelist Billy Graham also offers an insightful response to these questions in his book Answers to Life's Problems:
We do not know all the reasons why God permits evil. We need to remember, however, that he is not the cause of evil in this world and we should therefore not blame Him for it. Remember that God did not create evil, as some believe. God created the world perfect. Man chose to defy God and go his own way, and it is man's fault that evil entered the world. Even so, God has provided the ultimate triumph of good over evil in Jesus Christ, who on the cross, defeated Satan and those who follow him. Christ is coming back and when He does, all evil will be ended forever and righteousness and justice will prevail.
Have you ever thought about what would happen if God suddenly eliminated all the evil in this world? Not one person would be left, because we are all guilty of sin.
So how do these questions apply to those of us serving in law enforcement? Folks, we are at war both in the world of law enforcement and the military but also spiritually. Alistair Begg provides part of the answer:
Are you fighting with the adversary today? Are Satan, the world, and the flesh all against you? Do not be discouraged nor dismayed. Fight on! For God Himself is with you. Jehovah Nissi is your banner, and Jehovah Rophi is the healer of your wounds. Do not fear, you will overcome, for who can defeat Omnipotence? Fight on, "looking to Jesus" (Hebrews 12:2) and although the conflict is long and tough, the victory will be sweet, and the promised reward will be glorious.
Quoting 1 Chronicles 5:22 (For many fell, because the war was of God), Alistair goes on to say,
Warrior, as you fight under the banner of the Lord Jesus, observe this verse with holy joy, for as it was in the days of old, so is it now: If the war is of God, the victory is sure. The armies of God could barely muster forty-five thousand fighting men, and yet in their war with the enemy, they captured "a hundred thousand men," "for they cried to God in the battle, and he granted their urgent plea because they trusted in him."
The Lord saves not by many, nor by few; it is ours to go in Jehovah's name even if we are only a handful of men, for the Lord of Hosts is with us as our Captain. They did not neglect their weapons, but neither did they place their trust in them; we must use all fitting means, but our confidence must rest in the Lord alone, for He is the sword and the shield of His people. The great reason for their extraordinary success lay in the fact that "the war was of God."
Beloved, in fighting with sin in us and around us, with error doctrinal or practical, with spiritual wickedness in high places or low places, with devils and the devil's allies, you are waging Jehovah's war, and unless He himself can be defeated, you do not need to fear defeat. Do not tremble before superior numbers; do not shrink from difficulties or impossibilities; do not flinch at wounds or death; strike with the two-edged sword of the Spirit, and the dead shall lie in heaps.
The battle is the Lord's, and He will deliver His enemies into our hands. With steadfast foot, strong hand, dauntless heart, and flaming zeal, rush to the conflict, and the hosts of evil will fly like chaff before the gale.
We are in a fight – a war -- against evil and as peace officers we are at the tip of God’s spear. Accordingly, we must NEVER forget that it is God who fights for us and that we MUST seek Him in all we do. He must be first in our lives and we must be obedient both professionally and personally if we are to be effective good soldiers of Christ (2 Timothy 2:3).
Romans 12:9-21 offers further insight into these questions that have great application to our service as LEOs:
Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
A huge part of our call as God’s peacekeepers is to CONFRONT EVIL and we can only be truly effective at that if we are in fact His first (to wit, being truly saved via a life-saving, life-changing personal relationship with Jesus Christ). 2 Samuel 12 presents a picture of this when the prophet Nathan is sent by God to confront David for his sins of murder and adultery (The LORD sent Nathan to David). When God judges a situation He often uses His servants (us) as vessels for communicating to the guilty party. Law enforcement is a profession through which God wants to use you to be His instrument to bring righteousness to a situation.
The bottom line is that there is evil in the world because of our sin – and not just that of the suspects we deal with daily but also in our own lives as well. The solution? There is truly only one viable answer – Jesus Christ!

A Very "Mighty" Christmas to All!
Fellow Sheepdogs:
I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your families a very Mighty CHRISTmas. “Mighty?” You bet! Reference the very old Christmas carol, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman," the words that were sung long before publication held a very different meaning than they do now. In the Middle Ages, the term "merry" did not mean simply "happy." Rather, "merry" was used to describe armies, soldiers, and rulers in the context of “great,” “strong,” and “MIGHTY.” In addition, the word "rest" in the song's title did not mean to relax and take a nap! It meant "make." Thus we have "God Make You Mighty, Gentlemen.”
The unknown author wanted to convey the power of the message behind Christ's birth and how salvation becomes our strength. This bit of Christmas trivia should convey much to those of us serving in the military and law enforcement.
Mountain View PD Chief Mark Toth sent the following piece entitled,
“A Police Officer’s Christmas Story” (authored by an “unknown” officer):
“In 1974 when I first joined the department, I knew there would be holidays I would be apart from the family. The celebrations I missed those first years depressed me, and working on Christmas Eve was always the worst. On Christmas Eve, 1977, I learned that blessings can come disguised, and honor is more than just a word.
I was a one-man patrol on the 4-12 shift. The evening was cold. Everywhere I looked I saw reminders of the holiday, decorated trees in front windows and houses adorned with lights and figures. It all added to my funk. The shift had been relatively quiet, nothing to make the time pass any quicker.
Shortly after 2200 hours, I got a call to assist an elderly, terminally ill man. I arrived at the location and parked the patrol car in front of a simple Cape Cod style home. I walked up the short path to the front door and was greeted by a woman about 80 years old. She led me through a living room furnished in a style I had come to associate with older people to a back bedroom. We entered the small room where a frail, old man lay in bed with a blanket covering him and pulled up to his chin. He had a frightened look on his ashen face. His breathing was shallow and labored. He seemed barely alive. I looked at him, and he stared intently at me. He seemed to relax, and I did not understand the sudden calm expression. As I looked around the room, I saw the trappings of illness all around. The nightstand was littered with pill vials, and oxygen equipment was nearby. Along a wall was a dresser and on top were some memorabilia and a wooden jewelry case. I also noticed several framed photos. One caught my eye as it showed a young man in a police uniform. It was unmistakably the man in the bed.
I again looked at him, and he motioned me toward the bedside. I went to him, and he slid a thin arm from under the cover and took my hand. I looked at his face, and there was no look of fear, only peace. I knew then why I was there. He knew he was dying and was afraid of what was about to happen. He wanted the protection of a fellow cop on his journey. A caring God had seen to it that he would be delivered safely. The honor of being the escort fell to me.
At the end of my tour that night, the temperature seemed to have risen, and all the holiday displays made me smile. I no longer felt sorry for myself having to work on Christmas Eve.
I chose an honorable profession. I pray that when it is my turn to leave this world there will be a cop there to hold my hand and remind me I have nothing to fear. I wish all my brothers and sisters who are serving, and have served the law enforcement profession all the Joy and Peace of the Season.”
With all due respect to the author, I am compelled to add that this fellowship exists, in large part, to SHARE the truth, hope and love of the Gospel with those who have not trusted Christ as their Lord and Savior. The whole meaning of Christmas is that our Father sent His only Son to us as a babe born fully human yet fully God under the most humble of circumstances to ultimately do what we as officers can most certainly understand – to die in our place! Moreover, we understand that while it is God who called us to this “honorable profession,” being a cop does not “save” us any more than being a Baptist, Catholic (pick one), or “good” person does. Rather, it is only through a saving knowledge of the risen Savior that we can be saved. That said, let's not "hold a brother's hand" without at the same time doing all we can help them come to Christ. After all, isn't that what it means to "serve and protect" our own?
For "the lost" this Christmas, please don’t reject the “gift” that is Christ and what he did for YOU and I. Come to Him now and never look back (see the “How to Know Christ as Savior” links on our website or just get in touch with me – we’ll go to God together)!
Finally on the subject of Christmas (no silly PC “Happy Holidays” here), fellow FCPO national board member/retired Chicago PD Lt. Chuck Urgo sent the following based on Luke 2:8-9 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
Chuck writes, “Isn’t it cool to remember that the first announcement of the birth of Jesus was to a bunch of guys watching over the sheep and working Christmas Day! So for all you "working cops," have a great Christmas and get home safe to those who love you!”
MEETING RECAP:
Anyone who missed CSP Trooper Scott Hinshaw’s teaching last Thursday most certainly lost out on a truly momentous evening. I really wish we could have recorded his presentation but suffice it to say that Scotty knocked our socks off and the Holy Spirit was very much present. While we had a great turnout, the setting was still small enough to be “cop comfortable.” Much of Scott’s message was meant only for those present (suffice it to say that Scott lives what he preaches) but I can share that he taught on the true meaning of forgiveness and God’s “blessing” on our lives – and his. We’ll have Scott back to share again in the near future but I would strongly encourage everyone to hear our brother speak if you get the chance. Despite – or perhaps “because” of Scott’s horrific injuries -- God has a plan to use this brother for HIS glory and in ways Scott could never have imagined before the events of October 2007.
A big part of what I got out of Scott’s message was that we must be spiritually ready at all times. While it is clear that God’s plan for Scott’s life was much more powerful than the truck that plowed into him that Fall day two years ago, our Lord has used that experience to remind us that we do not know when this life will end or when He is coming back (see Mark 13:32-37, Matthew 24:36-51, Hebrews 10:25, 1 Thessalonians 5:4). Scott was not ready, yet God gave him a proverbial second chance. What about you? Would YOU be ready if “your time” was now? Without Christ we are lost and He is the ONLY way to salvation (John 14:6). God has given us free will to choose between HIS plan or our own. Rest assured, the former leads to eternal life in Him while and the latter leads to an eternity of unimaginable horror. Choose wisely!

Merry/Mighty Christmas!
I just wanted to take a moment to wish you and your families a very Mighty CHRISTmas. “Mighty?” You bet! Reference the very old Christmas carol, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman," the words that were sung long before publication held a very different meaning than they do now. In the Middle Ages, the term "merry" did not mean simply "happy." Rather, "merry" was used to describe armies, soldiers, and rulers in the context of “great,” “strong,” and “MIGHTY.” In addition, the word "rest" in the song's title did not mean to relax and take a nap! It meant "make." Thus we have "God Make You Mighty, Gentlemen.”
The unknown author wanted to convey the power of the message behind Christ's birth and how salvation becomes our strength. This bit of Christmas trivia should convey much to those of us serving in the military and law enforcement.
Mountain View PD Chief Mark Toth sent the following piece entitled,
“A Police Officer’s Christmas Story” (authored by an “unknown” officer):
“In 1974 when I first joined the department, I knew there would be holidays I would be apart from the family. The celebrations I missed those first years depressed me, and working on Christmas Eve was always the worst. On Christmas Eve, 1977, I learned that blessings can come disguised, and honor is more than just a word.
I was a one-man patrol on the 4-12 shift. The evening was cold. Everywhere I looked I saw reminders of the holiday, decorated trees in front windows and houses adorned with lights and figures. It all added to my funk. The shift had been relatively quiet, nothing to make the time pass any quicker.
Shortly after 2200 hours, I got a call to assist an elderly, terminally ill man. I arrived at the location and parked the patrol car in front of a simple Cape Cod style home. I walked up the short path to the front door and was greeted by a woman about 80 years old. She led me through a living room furnished in a style I had come to associate with older people to a back bedroom. We entered the small room where a frail, old man lay in bed with a blanket covering him and pulled up to his chin. He had a frightened look on his ashen face. His breathing was shallow and labored. He seemed barely alive. I looked at him, and he stared intently at me. He seemed to relax, and I did not understand the sudden calm expression. As I looked around the room, I saw the trappings of illness all around. The nightstand was littered with pill vials, and oxygen equipment was nearby. Along a wall was a dresser and on top were some memorabilia and a wooden jewelry case. I also noticed several framed photos. One caught my eye as it showed a young man in a police uniform. It was unmistakably the man in the bed.
I again looked at him, and he motioned me toward the bedside. I went to him, and he slid a thin arm from under the cover and took my hand. I looked at his face, and there was no look of fear, only peace. I knew then why I was there. He knew he was dying and was afraid of what was about to happen. He wanted the protection of a fellow cop on his journey. A caring God had seen to it that he would be delivered safely. The honor of being the escort fell to me.
At the end of my tour that night, the temperature seemed to have risen, and all the holiday displays made me smile. I no longer felt sorry for myself having to work on Christmas Eve.
I chose an honorable profession. I pray that when it is my turn to leave this world there will be a cop there to hold my hand and remind me I have nothing to fear. I wish all my brothers and sisters who are serving, and have served the law enforcement profession all the Joy and Peace of the Season.”
With all due respect to the author, I am compelled to add that this fellowship exists, in large part, to SHARE the truth, hope and love of the Gospel with those who have not trusted Christ as their Lord and Savior. The whole meaning of Christmas is that our Father sent His only Son to us as a babe born fully human yet fully God under the most humble of circumstances to ultimately do what we as officers can most certainly understand – to die in our place! Moreover, we understand that while it is God who called us to this “honorable profession,” being a cop does not “save” us any more than being a Baptist, Catholic (pick one), or “good” person does. Rather, it is only through a saving knowledge of the risen Savior that we can be saved. That said, let's not "hold a brother's hand" without at the same time doing all we can help them come to Christ. After all, isn't that what it means to "serve and protect" our own?
For "the lost" this Christmas, please don’t reject the “gift” that is Christ and what he did for YOU and I. Come to Him now and never look back (see the “How to Know Christ as Savior” links on our website or just get in touch with me – we’ll go to God together)!
Finally on the subject of Christmas (no silly PC “Happy Holidays” here), fellow FCPO national board member/retired Chicago PD Lt. Chuck Urgo sent the following based on Luke 2:8-9 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them.
Chuck writes, “Isn’t it cool to remember that the first announcement of the birth of Jesus was to a bunch of guys watching over the sheep and working Christmas Day! So for all you "working cops," have a great Christmas and get home safe to those who love you!”
MEETING RECAP:
Anyone who missed CSP Trooper Scott Hinshaw’s teaching last Thursday most certainly lost out on a truly momentous evening. I really wish we could have recorded his presentation but suffice it to say that Scotty knocked our socks off and the Holy Spirit was very much present. While we had a great turnout, the setting was still small enough to be “cop comfortable.” Much of Scott’s message was meant only for those present (suffice it to say that Scott lives what he preaches) but I can share that he taught on the true meaning of forgiveness and God’s “blessing” on our lives – and his. We’ll have Scott back to share again in the near future but I would strongly encourage everyone to hear our brother speak if you get the chance. Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers National Conference

As a reminder, our fellowship "meeting" this week will be our participation at the Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers (FCPO) National Conference this Friday-Sunday (Nov. 6-8) at the famous Glen Eyrie Conference & Retreat Center in Colorado Springs (http://www.gleneyrie.org/). I will be sharing all three days along with a number of nationally recognized Christian peace officers and LE chaplains. In addition, our own Matt Wallenburg will be leading worship. Don't miss this outstanding opportunity to meet, fellowship and grow with other Christian officers from all over the country. STUDY RECAP:
We had an excellent time of fellowship, prayer and Bible study yesterday on the topic of Knowing God's Will. Here is the recap for those who missed it and all our readers outside of Colorado:
Knowing and understanding God's will for our lives involves both definitive biblical truth along with a desire to seek and trust Christ in all things. In short, it involves a true desire to follow Him instead of seeking our own way. I have always maintained that a career in law enforcement should be a CALLING that God puts on our hearts. In accordance with same, how can we know God's will for our lives? Here are two general keys:
(1) Make sure what you are doing and/or asking for is not something the Bible forbids. Rest assured, if what you are doing or seeking is outside of God's Word, then are you definitely outside His will.
(2) Make sure what you are asking for or considering will glorify God and help you grow spiritually. If these two things are true and God is still not giving you what you are asking for, then it is likely not God’s will for you to have it or perhaps He is asking you to be patient and wait. Many want God to tell them specifically what to do—where to work, where to live, whom to marry, etc. Our Lord rarely supplies such direct and specific information. However, He does give us specific guidance about these things in His Word. For example, the Bible tells us that a believer is not to marry an unbeliever (II Cor. 14-17). As such, no matter how "right" something may FEEL, doing anything against what the Bible teaches is clearly not in keeping with God's will for us. What you feel is "right" and what is in fact truth are often very different things indeed.
Romans 12:2 tells us, “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.” The only decision God does not want us to make is to sin or resist His will. Rather, God wants us to make choices that are in agreement with His will. So, again, how can we know His will for us? If you are walking closely with the Lord and truly desiring His will for our life, God will place His desires on your heart. The key is wanting God’s will, not your own. “Delight yourself in the LORD and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). If the Bible does not speak against it and it can genuinely benefit you spiritually, then the Bible gives you the “permission” to make decisions and to follow your heart. If you truly and humbly seek God’s will through time with him in prayer and in His Word, He is faithful to reveal His will to you.
The Bible gives us a wealth of guidance on this topic and I strongly advise everyone to take the time to study it in terms of God's direction. Our Lord delights in spending time with us and is faithful to lead us if we seek Him. However, like any good parent, He also loves us enough to say "NO" when we are going astray or to discipline us if we are disobedient.
Finally, consider the following 7 biblical guidelines:
(1) God wants you to know His will more than you want to His will.
-- Commit your way to the Lord through prayer.
-- Psalm 37:3-6
(2) You won’t miss God’s plan if your heart is set on pleasing him.
-- Philippians 1:6 “He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion.”
(3) God has perfect plan for imperfect people.
-- God loves us not because of our perfection or performance but because He IS love. Even when we fail Him and the people around us, He longs for us to come to Him for forgiveness, love, guidanced and help.
-- Psalm 37:23-24; Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.
(4) God will give direction to anyone who asks.
-- God promises to tell you what to do if you ask Him, trust Him, and follow His leading.
-- James 1:5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
(5) God is always at work behind the scenes and has our best interests at heart.
-- Job 23:9-11 When He is at work in the north, I do not see Him, when He turns to the south, I catch no glimpse of Him. But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I will come forth as gold.
(6) We seldom choose our circumstances but we can choose our attitudes.
-- When we are in a difficult or confusing situation, He urges us to choose an attitude of faith, rest and joy in Him.
-- 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Rejoice (also translated Be joyful…) always; pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks, for this is God’s WILL for you in Christ Jesus.
(7) If the Bible forbids it, don’t bother praying about it.
-- God won’t lead us contrary to what He has already revealed in His Word
-- God will give us the strength to obey if we ask for it. Phil. 4:13 I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me.
